An inquest into the death of a 16-month-old baby has concluded she tragically died whilst on holiday after choking on her breakfast of rice and lentils.
Shanaya Kalpesh Dhavale, from Basingstoke, was on a family holiday to the Isle of Wight with her parents during the Easter period of last year.
On the morning of 18th April 2022, things took a turn for the worse when the youngster started choking whilst eating her breakfast in the caravan the Dhavales were staying at.
As previously reported by Island Echo, medics from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance were scrambled to Lower Hyde Holiday Park in Shanklin in response to a 999 call made to the emergency services.
Working alongside their colleagues from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, doctors and paramedics spent around 90 minutes on scene before flying the 16-month-old girl directly to Southampton General Hospital.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of all involved, Shanaya died at Southampton General Hospital a month later on 18th May 2022.
An inquest in writing into the death of Shanaya Dhavale, completed on 30th March this year by Caroline Sumeray, His Majesty’s Senior Coroner for the Isle of Wight, concluded that her death was accidental, having choked on her breakfast of rice and lentils. This led to her sustaining an unsurvivable hypoxic brain injury.

This is so sad how a family holiday could turn into such a tragic event.
Poor little soul, RIP XX
