More than 130 speeding drivers were caught on roads across the Isle of Wight in February, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed.
Throughout February, the Safer Roads Unit made 27 visits to 20 separate locations across the West, North East and South Wight.
During that period, they caught 133 speeding motorists.
At some of the locations visited not a single speeding motorist was caught, showing that Police activity and presence on the Island’s roads are having an impact.
A spokesperson from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“We know poor driving standards including speeding are a concern to local residents on the Island, so we are committed to providing you with these regular updates. We have a number of teams and initiatives running on the Island to keep our roads safer, and this is just one of those pieces of work.
“Speeding is one of the leading causes of serious and fatal injury collisions, so the less speeding motorists we have on our roads the better.
“Our work is much more effective when we receive information and intelligence from the public about specific issues and problem areas. So, please keep reporting things to police either by calling 101 or visiting: https://orlo.uk/bQrs9“.

The drivers they actually catch are not the real speeders, they need to be out on a night time when the boy racers are about.
What a ridiculous comment! speed KILLS is that simple enough for you to understand.
Actually the previous article the other day contradicts that, mobile phone, drugs, alcohol and poor driving skills/speed to road conditions etc kill more. And out of these 130 drivers most were probably marginally over. The worst speeders are at night.

If only Police were to concentrate on the real problems on Island roads and not have their time wasted on endless calls for ‘speeding clampdowns’ by people who don’t understand what the real problem is, the Island could be a much safer place!
Stop harassing motorists and sort out the problems that cause the other 83% of accidents on the Island!
But the thing is: even if the direct cause of accident was for example a mobile phone being used by a driver, then slower speeds still help to mitigate the result of said accident. Difference between 50 and 30mph is between death and life for pedestrians for example.
Teaching people to adhere to speed limits set by traffic engineers helps in ALL cases of accidents, even if it doesn’t directly stop them.
And it shouldn’t be that hard to just, you know, don’t drive faster than a sign says? It’s not rocket science.
I’m with you that police shouldn’t have to teach people that. But adults are the way they are and apparently they need schooling and scolding by tickets.
That’s just woke leftist politics, if a pedestrian doesn’t want to get hit they should stay away from the road. This space is for us not them

Someone speeding and thus increasing the chance of losing control of their 2-3t vehicle can kill you all the same.
I don’t know about you but I don’t want uncontrollably speeding boxes of steel around me when I go to buy myself a baguette for breakfast In the morning. When I’m dead it won’t matter whether it was a real criminal or real stupid. Walking safely shouldn’t be some unachievable dream in 21st century, it should be a standard so it’s all good to take sub-standard drivers off the road.
Excellent. Hope they had maximum fines and a severe warning. No need for these budding Lewis Hamiltons. Keep on catching them . Pity the police don’t have unmarked vans.
Put an unmarked speed van on Bouldnor Road (30 mph) at anytime and catch hundreds more every week.
Would pay for the van and occupant many times over.

Lazy policing at its best, many of the vehicles going past aren’t even registered or insured so penalty notices wont even get delivered/paid.
Good. We don’t need irresponsible drivers. Nobody wants to die going in the morning to buy a baguette for their breakfast because some dangerous person thinks they know better than road engineers what speed they should drive and loses control of their vehicle. It’s a dangerous 2000kg or heavier machine requiring skills and careful operation. Grow up and take responsibility – for yourself and your machine, which includes making sure you don’t endanger or harm other road users with it. Too many adults are allowed to do adult things like driving a car nowadays while still running on childish brain. Grow up.

A very good point, as if the highways have restrictions placed there ‘they’ call them ‘traffic calming zones’, yet IF as you do, you may park half on the road, doing the exact same thing, you are criticised. Yet as you say, you are helping slow the idiot drivers down.

What’s with all the NEGATIVE comments on here? Don’t you lot want safer roads on the island? It’s a huge task because, too many have been getting away with too much for too long. The Police are not at fault for bad driving, speeding, no tax, insurance or MOT.
It’s the owner and drivers responsibility to ensure their car is fully legal and roadworthy.

Why are all the speed cameras turned off and all the CCTV.
They could catch so many people speeding. The roads are so very bad. Every time we go out someone is driving dangerously.
If you look at the statistics, many of the people caught speeding are guilty of other road offences. Either an unroadworthy car, lacking insurance / licence or drunk or drugged driving.
An the people moaning about it, wait till you have your car written off by a speeding driver jumping the lights. You’ll soon change your mind.
That’s not enough !! I’m a walker and I dice with death most days with cars coming round corners. Mill street to Drill Hall road is a race corse for some and as for The Mall and Caesar’s road, it’s horrendous..and yet it came to the red lights on the high street to take a life in two places.. when are you drivers going to slow down and be aware that you will always get there…..
They need to sit along Church Road in Wootton bearing in mind there is a school there. Now that would be a revenue spinner.
Driving from lake to top of brading it’s impossible to speed at the moment,saying that I not seen the speed camera van there for some time
