A tornado that formed over the East Wight earlier this afternoon (Tuesday) ripped the roof from a derelict building and caused other damage at Sandown Bay Holiday Centre in Yaverland, leaving behind a trail of debris.
As first reported by Island Echo, a tornado was spotted between Brading and Bembridge shortly before 13:00. The moment the funnel developed and extended towards the ground, increasing in size and picking up speed, was captured on camera.
Many commented saying that it was simply a funnel cloud, but that theory has been put to bed with the tornado being confirmed as touching down at Yaverland, between Sandown and Bembridge.
Large sections of timber, general building materials, bricks and stones have been flung around 30 metres across an open section of grass at Sandown Bay Holiday Centre, with debris smashing into a patio window causing it to shatter.
A piece of garden furniture has also been smashed to pieces by the tornado, which is thought to have brought winds of around 120mph moving across the land at 30mph.
Local weather expert Jamie Russell from IW Met Service visited the scene with Island Echo this afternoon, piecing together the likely movements of the tornado. Jamie explained that the tornado touched down briefly before breaking up as it moved over higher land, with the potential for there having been 2 tornados. A classic sign is the narrow path of debris.
The initial formation was captured on a timelapse camera in Lake.
It is also reported that damage was caused on the High Street in Bembridge.
Further yellow weather warnings for the Isle of Wight are expected as the week progresses.

It’s OK everyone, my mate down the pub said climate change is not real and the scientists that have studied it for decades don’t know anything.
Climate change has always happened since the ice age, and no matter what we do, it will continue to change anyway…..you can’t stop mother nature, the planet will continue to do its thing…
You are aware there’s been more than one ice age aren’t you? .you are aware it normally takes tens of thousands of years for the earth’s climate to shift from cold to hot and back to cold again. Just look at the rate of global temperature increases since the industrial revolution began the evidence is there and undeniable.
Your mate is wrong. Though small tornadoes are nothing new in the UK.
It’s nonsensical to try and blame every bit of inclement weather on climate change. How far back do you take it? Was the ‘hurricane’ of 1987 due to climate change? How about the winter of 1963 which I’ve been told was the coldest for hundreds of years, was that climate change too? Or how about 1855 which was apparently the driest year on record in the UK? All down to climate change?
I’m not saying that the climate isn’t changing – it does constantly, that’s a fact, but trying to blame every hot, wet or windy day on man-made climate change is farcical and leaves the whole science open to ridicule.
Ah yes the rising sea levels of Sydney Harbour.
0cm since 1860 was it?
If you are referencing the 2 photos, it’s was proven inaccurate years ago. It’s actually risen around 12cm since the 19th century.
Post body
He’s right. Climate change is fear mongering used to make you pay more for things that produce carbon. We could have been carbon negative a decade ago.
touched down in bembridge high st causing damage to some of the shops
Touched down in Sandown High Street and caused £250,000 worth of improvements.
Was they second shop owners or holiday shop owners ?
Much worser in Shetland.
If it touched down on the Ocean Hotel…..would we have noticed?
touched down in sandown tidying up some of the shops!
Tornado hits Sandown and causes thousands of pounds of improvements!
Sandown bay club house has been an eyesore for years.
Sadly the site looks very run down.
the most action on the Isle of Wight for a long time
Shame we cant book a time slot for a tornado, next Sunday’s bicycle ride would have been appropriate.
Cough, insurance fraud , cough. That’s been pulled off with a pick up truck or something.
a tornado could only improve sandown
Shame it could not rid Sandown of Feral gangs
Debatable whether a tornado had anything to do with climate change, nevertheless..
In a hundred years time when areas of the planet are uninhabitable children will be taught how swathes of the population lived in denial til they passed away to leave their legacy for many generations to follow. Children will be taught never again should we put our collective “pocket” before the planet, and greed should never again be man’s guiding force. Never forget will be the mantra, like the Holocaust of the 20th century.. It will be an era of shame
What utter rubbish you have spouted there Clive! All this climate change crap is just that! Aload of crap! Summers are hot and winters are cold! Been like that forever, just now days every one makes a big deal about it, I’ll be reving my v8 a bit more to do my bit for you hedge dwelling tree huggers!
There are none so blind as those who cannot see is an age old saying that came into being because of a history of people like you unfortunately; you can take a horse to water but you cannot make it drink comes to mind too..
