A tree that stood tall outside St Mary’s Hospital in Newport – and had been there for over 100 years – was brought down by yesterday’s storm.
Contractors were urgently called in yesterday morning (Tuesday) when the large tree fell, blocking the exit for ambulances departing from A&E.
The strong gusts proved simply too much and toppled the tree, ripping its roots out of the ground. Wind speeds of 110mph were recorded at The Needles.
During the construction of the hospital in the 1990s, the position of the tree was incorporated into the design with the raised exit ramp from A&E bending around the tree, as photographed above.
There have been calls from local residents for a new tree to be planted in its place for future generations.

Such a lovely tree, hope they replace it with a smaller version, not enough trees in the world.
What a pity, hope someone collects it’s acorns and grows another one to replace it
very sad, hope it did not overwhelm St Mary’s
I doubt the development around it didn’t do the roots and good.No protecton around the roots and development changes soil hydrology. They then die a slow death. Its young at only 100.Poor old tree.
