UPDATED: Mainland search teams and forensic investigators are this morning (Thursday) due to conduct an examination of the scene of last night’s property fire in Porchfield, in which it is feared a person died.
A fingertip search of the charred remains of the timber-framed building will be getting underway shortly in a joint operation involving Police, the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and specialist resources from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.
As previously reported, fire crews were called to the detached rural property at around 20:30 last night. By the time the first appliance from Newport had arrived on scene the timber-framed building was well alight and little could be done to save the property.
Sadly, it is thought that the occupant of the home perished in the fire.
Police have established a cordon around the immediate area with a scene guard in place.
UPDATE @ 11:10 – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that the body of an individual – thought to be a woman – has been discovered.
A spokesperson for the force has this morning said:
“We were called by our colleagues from the Isle of Wight Fire Service to reports of a fire at a residential property on Porchfield Road shortly before 8:40pm on Wednesday, December 12.
“A body was found inside the property. We are still in the process of contacting next of kin.
“Investigations at the address are ongoing but at this stage the death is not being treated as suspicious.”
