Firefighters and paramedics were mobilised to a dangerous structure in East Cowes during the early hours of this morning (Thursday) when strong winds caused damage to a roof.
1 fire appliance from East Cowes was mobilised at 04:36 to a property on Ferry Road in the town.
Part of the roof of a property became damaged when a ‘boulder’ was carried by the wind and smashed through the roof, resulting in 1 person being injured.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were called to the scene to check over the casualty.
The Isle of Wight Council’s building control officers are expected to inspect the structure this morning.
UPDATE – A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Council has said:
“We have assessed the building and asked the owners to make the roof safe by removing loose slates damaged by dislodged coping stones.
“We have also advised the owner to assess the stability of the remaining coping stones on both the rear and the front of the building, with any replacement copings to be mechanically fixed.
“They have engaged a contractor who we understand is erecting a scaffold to carry out the necessary assessment and works.”
