Cowes Harbour Master came to the aid of a yacht that collided with a ‘slow moving’ Cowes Floating Bridge earlier this evening (Sunday).
At around 17:45 the small yacht collided with the brand new but troubled vessel and became entangled in the chains that stretch across the River Medina.
It is said the currently out-of-service floating bridge has been slowly crossing between East Cowes and Cowes today, but still without any passengers. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency pulled the Floating Bridge No. 6 from service earlier this month, just days after it began operations.
Mairi Lipington, who captured the drama on camera, has told Island Echo that traffic on the River Medina has appeared ‘confused’ by the slow moving floating bridge. Several Islanders have also commented on the fact the new multi-million pound vessel appears to be slower than its 40-year-old predecessor.
It is understood the yacht was towed to a nearby marina.
There is still no word on when a normal service will be resumed between East and West Cowes. It comes after vehicles were left scraping their cars and a total loss of power.
