Workmen seen coming and going at Camp Hill prison over the past few weeks are said to be carrying out survey work, according to the Ministry of Justice.
The former Category C prison has sat empty for the past 7 years after closing its doors in 2013. The prison, which is situated next to HMP Isle of Wight, was originally opened in 1912 by Winston Churchill.
It’s not entirely clear what work has been taking place behind the solid walls, but there has been some suggestion that remedial works are being carried to ensure it is safe and secure.
The Isle of Wight Council is hoping to secure a deal with the Government to acquire the land to enable a new garden village to be built, with an announcement expected shortly.
A Prison Service spokesman has told Island Echo:
“We are carrying out surveys to determine the future of the site. No decisions have been made and further information will be provided in due course.”

Here we go mad Islanders jumping to all sorts of conclusions again.
It’s not going to be an immigration camp you wouldn’t be that lucky, besides it cost too much to get to the Island on the Ferry.
Whatever our c ouncillors have in mind, it will probably be a total disaster and cost millions of our money and NOT make any money except for a few people.
They however will do very well out of such. Vote them out
