Action is finally set to get underway on Belgrave Road in Ventnor, with works due to start next week to remove loose rock and vegetation from the unstable cliff face that collapsed back in March.
A rockfall on 7th March forced the closure of Belgrave Road for the second time in recent years, sparking frustration among local residents and businesses.
The road was previously shut in 2020 following a landslip and did not reopen until early 2023 after nearly 3 years of disruption.
Despite ongoing stability assessments and calls for urgent action, there has been no clear timeline for reopening since the March incident.
The Isle of Wight Council said in April that they were seeking to speed up the process by serving notice to affected landowners.
Now, Councillor Ed Blake, local councillor for Ventnor, has provided an update to local residents.
He has confirmed that work to remove loose rock and vegetation from the rock face will begin next Wednesday (9th July).
It’s said that assessments to clear the rock will take place at the same time, with work to start as soon as possible to clear the carriageway obstruction.

So no actual clearance of the rockfall, just the loose stuff from the remains of the cliff? In other words, I assume, they will just be adding to the pile of rubble on the road before looking at how to remove this rubble from the road! Might I suggest a couple of pneumatic road drills to break up the big stuff, then JCB bucket into a wagon and drive it away.. That will be £5k for the advice thanks.
What makes me laugh, sh*t service all year round
and then action before the school holidays
Lol
Oh, please don’t! It’s such a splendid tourist attraction! And home to at least one nice little badger, as I saw back at the end of April.
Badgers live further down. Also there was one that was taken away to be checked on as it was mooching around during the day and they thought it was blind. They coped when the road collapsed before. We need this road cleared asap
