UPDATED: A woman’s body has been found in Shanklin this afternoon (Friday).
Coastguard teams from Bembridge, Ryde and Ventnor are on the scene at Hope Road alongside ambulance crews and Police, including detectives. Emergency services were called to the area at around 14:15.
The body of a woman is being recovered from the cliff with the assistance of the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Scenes of crime investigators are at the scene inspecting a nearby bin at the cliff railings.
Parts of the Esplanade have been cordoned off.
UPDATE @ 16:20 – A recovery operation remains ongoing this afternoon.
The Animal and Water Rescue Unit from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has joined firefighters from Shanklin, who are standing by at the incident.
The area remains cordoned off.
UPDATE @ 16:40 – Efforts to recover the body of the deceased are still ongoing, although the Animal and Water Rescue Unit from Newport has left the scene and returned to station.
The death is not being treated as suspicious at this moment in time.
UPDATE @ 17:30 – The body of a currently unnamed female has been recovered by Coastguard teams as darkness falls.
The incident is now being brought to a close as investigations into the death continue.
