The Wildheart Animal Sanctuary is celebrating a major milestone in 2026 as it marks 50 years of caring for animals – and is now calling on the Isle of Wight community to help tell its story.
Formerly known as the Isle of Wight Zoo, the Sanctuary has evolved over 5 decades into a centre focused on rescue, rehabilitation and compassion.
Generations of residents, visitors, staff and volunteers have passed through its gates, creating lasting memories that remain closely tied to the Isle of Wight.
To mark the anniversary, the Sanctuary is asking people across the Island to share photographs, memorabilia and personal stories from throughout its history.
This includes former staff, long-time supporters and visitors, as well as those who may recall encounters with founder Jack Corney – whether in local pubs, on the beach or elsewhere around the Island.
Lawrence Bates, CEO, has said:
“All of these memories are part of who we are.
“Our history isn’t just about the animals – it’s about the people who have been part of this journey over the past 50 years. We know there are so many wonderful stories out there, and we would love the community to share them with us as we celebrate this milestone together.”
Submissions can be sent via email to [email protected], with contributors encouraged to include as much detail as possible to help bring their memories to life.
Selected entries may be featured in anniversary events and digital content throughout the year.
The milestone offers a chance to reflect on the Sanctuary’s journey – and recognise the role the Isle of Wight community has played in shaping it over the past 50 years.
