Passengers travelling on Wightlink’s Lymington to Yarmouth car ferry service are currently stuck on board the vessel ‘Wight Sun’ as it is unable to dock at Yarmouth due to a mechanical issue.
Sometime around 20:30, a problem developed on the car ferry mid-Solent whilst crossing between Lymington and Yarmouth.
It is thought that Wight Sun has lost the use of 1 engine, reducing the manoeuvrability and speed of the vessel. The car ferry is unable to safely dock at Yarmouth at this time as a result.
Those on board the vessel tell Island Echo it appears to be ‘adrift’.
Wightlink have not yet issued a travel update or statement on the matter.
UPDATE @ 21:20 – The crew of Wight Sun have been able to restore functionality and the vessel has now safely moored alongside at Yarmouth, albeit delayed.
It is unknown at this time if there with be any alterations to the weekend timetable.

I do believe that wightlink ferry from Yarmouth to Lymington route did have brand new engines on all there vessels as a former cummuter on the route they make so many excuses that the ferry brakes down or there is not enough staff I do think wightlink are a rip off with there boat fares and I don’t think they give a dame about the passengers when the boats brake down
That is utterly nonsense I have travelled with Wightlink for 16 years they are always pleasant and friendly. They cant help mechanical issues maybe if you know how they can avoid them then you tell them.
Easy solution purchase a decent vessel.. both the company and the vessels are not fit for purpose.
These vessels has been stopped on at least two occasions though not meeting the M.C.A. regulations.
I have sympathy for the hard working staff .. but this company needs to go.. !
Mechanical things break down. Tough luck for the passengers. Been there, done that…..nobodies fault.
Nigel well said, unfortunately mechanical things do break down.
Just one of those things.
Ferry’s May be costly but we’d be stuck without them, maybe all you moaners should have a little minute too yourselves and have a think!!!
When we get the fixed link broken down ferries won’t be a problem any more!
Say that 35,0000 feet in the air on a plane…
Pleased everyone managed to get off okay. Well done to the crew for getting the vessel going so it could dock at Yarmouth
People need to wind their necks in. If it wasn’t for Wight link ferries you wouldn’t be able to get off the island. Passengers. Maybe held up for a while but think about the crew who have been on there for hours working to give the passengers a safe and relaxing journey. The crew have homes to go to as well. Passengers need to give a thought to them.
Have Red Funnel gone out fo business then?
