Wight Tri athlete Helen Scholes has proudly represented Great Britain at the World Triathlon Age-Group Sprint-Distance Championships in Wollongong, Australia, finishing 25th overall in her category.
Helen took on the challenging course on Friday 17th October, describing it as one of the most well-organised and friendly events she has ever raced. The compact layout meant the crowds were close throughout, creating a buzzing atmosphere from start to finish.
The race began with a chaotic swim in the harbour, featuring an unusual ‘M’-shaped route. Helen was caught in the thick of it, describing the experience as “more aquatic mosh pit than Michael Phelps”, but she successfully navigated the course and made a swift transition onto the bike.
The 2-lap cycle route tested competitors with its punchy climbs, fast flats and a “no passing zone” that added an extra layer of difficulty. Helen stayed focused and maintained her position throughout the segment.
The final run took athletes around the local lighthouse three times, with each loop including a tough hill climb. Despite the challenge, Helen pushed through and crossed the finish line to well-deserved cheers and a cooling hose spray.
She completed the course in a time of 1:24:36, finishing 25th out of 56 in her age group and 2nd out of 5 Team GB athletes – just behind a former Olympic silver medallist.
A special highlight of the event came before the race even started, when Helen’s daughter flew in overnight and surprised her in the transition area.
Helen will now move up to the 60–64 age group for future events, but first she plans to enjoy watching the para triathletes and professional athletes take on the T100 in Wollongong.
Speaking after the event, Helen said the swim course still had her guessing on its exact shape.
