The Robert Hooke Society based in Freshwater will be displaying 12 stunning new Walking Trail plaques at Fort Victoria, near Yarmouth on Thursday (15th July).
Established in 2009, the Robert Hooke Trail promotes knowledge of Hooke’s life and achievements and how his childhood experiences on the Isle of Wight shaped his ideas throughout his career. His story unfolds over a picturesque walk around the West Wight. During its existence members of the Society have led groups around the Trail as part of the Island’s Walking Festival.
Robert was born in Freshwater in the 17th century. His father was perpetual curate at All Saints Church.
The trail plaques relate the story in words and pictures of his rise from a child on the Island to Scientist, Inventor, Geologist, Astronomer, Engineer, Architect and London City Surveyor following the Fire of London. As a Fellow of the Royal Society he was a contemporary of Sir Isaac Newton and his close friend Sir Christopher Wren.
The existing trail has 12 information plaques spaced out around a circular route. These are now being replaced by more aesthetically pleasing designs in a joint venture between the Freshwater Parish Council and the Robert Hooke Society. The new plaques are made from vitreous enamel-coated steel and have been manufactured by AJ Wells in Newport, one of a few companies undertaking the process which is widely used on the London Underground, Paris Metro and road signage.
Each colourful plaque displays a different facet in the life of the great scientist. The main images were painted by the historical artist, Rita Greer. Her painted memorials of Hooke can be found in academic institutions such as the University of Oxford and the Open University. The plaques utilise modern technology in the form of QR Codes and what3words for directions and to make more information available to the visitor.
The display is being held on Thursday 15th July to commemorate Hooke’s birthday 3 days later. It will be open from 11:00 to 16:00 in the Corner Room at Fort Victoria. Entrance and Parking are free.
