Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely has said that Boris Johnson’s deal with the EU looks to be a ‘very strong one’.
As reported by Island Echo earlier today, a deal has finally been struck between the UK and the European Union on the eve of Christmas – just days before the transitional period ends on 31st December, New Year’s Eve.
In a statement issued this afternoon, Mr Seely has said:
“After four and a half years of Brexit dominating our Parliament and public life, today we have finally done a deal. It looks like a very strong one.
“Most importantly, our critical objectives have been kept. We have taken back control of our money, borders, laws and ability to strike trade deals with other nations in the world. There is no role in the UK for the European Court of Justice. A points-based immigration system will allow us to control who comes and lives here.
“This is what people voted for when they voted for Brexit. On the Island, 62 percent voted to leave the EU. We are delivering our promise to them.
“I also hope that those who voted remain can see this as a fair outcome.
“The UK has given ground on some points. The EU has on others. We have apparently won our case on more points, but that is not the issue – the issue is we have a deal that all sides think they can live with.
“Farmers in the UK, and on the Isle of Wight, will be able to continue to export into the EU with minimal change. For our shipbuilders, and other manufacturers, as well as exporting to the EU, the UK can use free trade deals to grow our trade more quickly globally. That process has already started.
“With Brexit done and the Covid-19 vaccinations under way, I believe – despite the restrictions – that we can look forward to next year with a sense of hope. Over the next few years I will be working with the Government to deliver on that promise of a new start for our country and also for the Island.
“I congratulate the government and I wish Islanders a happy Christmas and New Year”.
