A yellow weather warning is in force for the Isle of Wight this morning (Thursday) as heavy showers merge into a large area of thundery rain, with torrential downpours expected.
IW Met Service has issued a last minute warning, which came into force at 02:00 and lasts until midday, as weather models suggest the Island will be the subject of heavy rain.
Households have awoken this morning to rainfall, which could become torrential at times with occasional lightning in places.
Up to 50mm is possible in places but widely 10-15mm of rainfall will be seen. This could lead to flash flooding in the worst hit areas.
Islanders are warned about surface water and debris on the roads, including silt and stones washing across the carriageway.
IW Met Service says there is a risk of cloud to ground lightning, as well as polluted storm water from outfalls affecting the Island’s beaches.
Earlier forecasts suggested the rain would be 30-50 miles further East of the Island.

Um… is it still a forecast if they effectively tell us about it after it has already happened?
I suppose at least that would mean they’d get it right occasionally.
The most reliable forecast has always been: look out your window.
If you know your met, the sky is always a good indicator of what is to come.
No the best one is nature, use a large pine cone and hang it up outside, when it shuts it is going to rain and when open sun. 100% guaranteed with no maintenance required.
We never used to need to have ‘weather warnings’ because of rain or thunder.
No , there were not weather warnings, its all just to create climate hysteria amongst the gullible. wait till October, then the usual autumn gales will be turned into “storms” with stupid names for the same reason.
Good Point.
I wonder if they still have “Tornado Season” in North America ?
Or “The Rainy Season” in South East Asia ?
These things don’t exist no more, it is now known as Global Warming, plural.
Whatever it was most welcome, I am sure I heard my garden sigh:-)
