Torrential downpours, which could be worse than those experienced in the last few weeks, are set to hit the Isle of Wight in the coming days prompting the first of several anticipated yellow weather warnings to be issued by IW Met Service.
Forecasters say an area of heavy showers and localised thunderstorms will develop later this evening and then spread overnight and into the early hours, potentially affecting the Island between 22:00 and 02:00.
Some extremely heavy downpours are likely locally, and even though they should be fairly short in duration, totals of 15-20mm are possible – with extremely localised falls of up to 30mm.
Tonight’s weather bring the risk of cloud to ground lightning, flash flooding in the usual locations and surface water on roads and walkways. Motorists should be aware of silt, soil and stones being washed across roads, especially in rural areas.
Jamie Russell, Chief Forecaster at IW Met Service, tells Island Echo that several further warnings are expected this week with an estimated 200mm of rainfall possible in the coming days in some parts of the Isle of Wight.
The last time the Island had sudden, torrential downpours there was significant flooding in locations such as Arreton, Sandown, Shanklin and Ventnor.
This initial warning for heavy rain and thunderstorms is in force for 6 hours from 21:00 tonight until 03:00 tomorrow morning.

This is the fourth time. Can we have some rain in the Ryde area please. The concrete where my lawn was is not much good for the kids to fall on.
That’s what hosepipes are for.
Oh, wait…..
I love always these warnings for weather that happens every year, its like the boy who cried wolf… of we ever actually get something extreme not many will actually take notice
You’ve obviously never been flooded out of your house. Ask residents of Arreton what it felt like to have mud coming into their houses.
so glad the drought and heatwave are now over, it was so hot for 2 summer days! Scary stuff. Maybe the hosepipe ban can be lifted now we are all safe from the climate change
