Aspiring firefighters on the Isle of Wight are being encouraged to consider a life-saving career as wholetime firefighter recruitment prepares to open – with a dedicated open day planned in Ryde.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is set to launch its next recruitment drive in the coming months, with a series of open days giving potential applicants the chance to experience the role first-hand.
One of those events will take place at Ryde Fire Station on Saturday 16th May, with booking opening at 10:00 on Friday 8th May. Book your place here: https://bit.ly/74RecruitDay.
Each session lasts 3 hours, with attendees able to choose between a 10:00 or 14:00 start.
Those attending the open days will be able to speak directly with serving firefighters, gain advice on the application process and take part in elements of the practical selection tests.
Applicants for the role will go through several stages before being offered a position. These include:
- Application
- Online tests
- Fitness assessments
- Interview
- Applicant pool
- Medical and background checks
- Offer of contract
- Initial training
Candidates must complete a series of physical tests as part of the selection process, including ladder climbs, casualty evacuation and equipment carries. A full guide to the fitness requirements is available via the fire service website.
Spaces for the open days are expected to fill quickly, with booking links going live 7 days before each event.

Not being funny, this is the best job in the world. Best of luck to all island candidates. The reward is so much more than the pay you receive.
In the country we currently live in persons on benefits
are rewarded much better and they don’t have to risk their
lives.
Sad but true!
