Veolia has been appointed to support the Isle of Wight Council for 3 months as part of ongoing plans to replace outgoing waste contractor Thalia.
It was back in December that Island Echo exclusively revealed that Tahlia was walking away from its £225million contract with the Isle of Wight Council.
The very next day, it was reported that Veolia was set to take over the provision of waste collection and disposal services on the Island.
Now, it has been confirmed that Veolia has been awarded a contract to undertake consultancy services for the Isle of Wight Council’s integrated waste management contract for 3 months, until 31st March 2026.
The parties remain in active discussions for Veolia to manage the residual waste treatment, household waste and recycling collections and management of household waste recycling centres on the Island for a period of 2 years.
After the 24-month period, the contract would then go out to tender again, as it did when Island Waste – run by Biffa – transferred to Amey, later becoming Thalia.
With 18 integrated waste management contracts with local authorities across the UK, Veolia has decades of experience in providing high quality municipal recycling and waste services, as well as managing the nearby Hampshire integrated waste management contract.
Natasha Dix, the council’s service director for waste, environment and planning, has said:
“Our priority is to ensure continuity of essential waste and recycling services for residents and businesses on the Island.
“By working closely with Veolia during this consultancy period, we are taking proactive steps to maintain high standards and prepare for a smooth transition to a longer-term solution.”
