A scooterist down for the annual Isle of Wight Scooter Rally has tragically been killed following a collision with a car in Apse Heath last night (Thursday), which has led to the arrest of a 36-year-old woman from Ventnor on suspicion of death by dangerous driving.
Police have this morning confirmed that a scooterist has died as a result of a collision between a black Citroen C3 and a motorcycle on Newport Road, outside the entrance to the Willow Brook and Ninham Farm campsite.
Island Echo understands the victim – a male – had travelled from Germany to the Isle of Wight for the start of the rally and was heading to his campsite just 200 metres further down the road at Sandown Airport. Damage can be seen to the front nearside (passenger side) of the C3.
Hampshire Constabulary has revealed that a 36-year-old woman from Ventnor has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She remains in custody at this time.
As previously reported, emergency services were called to the scene at just before 21:45 last night. Sadly, there was nothing that could be done to save the man’s life and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Specialist investigators from the mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit spent several hours overnight forensically piecing together the events that led to the death – the 8th fatality on the Island’s roads this year.
Newport Road has now reopened in both directions following the recovery of the 2 vehicles involved. The road was closed for more than 10 hours.
Some campers staying at Willow Brook/Ninham had to spend the night in their cars as they were unable to access the entrance to the campsite.
Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to this collision. Anyone with information or relevant dashcam or CCTV footage should call 101 giving reference number 44220346694.

RIP young man, my thoughts go out to his family and friends at this sad time.
Really sad. Thoughts are with the family and friends.
Another fatality coursed by another idiot with no respect for the gift of life, so so sorry for the victim and his loved ones…
Whilst the death is a terrible thing, lets not fall in to the usual trap in this country of ‘guilty till proven innocent’ on the roads. The Police are appealing for witnesses so that means they have no actual proof at this time that the driver was at fault. Guilty or not, that driver has to go through life knowing that had they not been there another human would still be alive. That’s tough for anyone, so till we know what happened lets not label people as idiots eh?
the arrest of a 36-year-old woman from Ventnor on suspicion of death by dangerous driving.
they have good grounds for it – and yes, she is an idiot, as she wouldn’t have been arrested if it was clearly an accident – stop being a hand wringing do gooder
Unless you have been involved in a road traffic accident where someone is seriously injured or killed then you will not understand that it is common procedure to detain/arrest the person in charge of the vehicle so that a formal statement can be taking at the police station. Until the full facts come out no blame can be asserted …
It is common practice to arrest, but not to detain. Drivers are only detained due to extenuating circumstances like being drunk or high on drugs. That fact alone tells the story.
It doesn’t say she has been detained it says “She remains in custody at this time”. If you have ever been arrested or know somebody that has you will know its not a quick thing. You will be in the station for the best part of the day waiting for your solicitor to arrive and then giving a statement. As most solicitors don’t work night times you will be waiting until the next day for one to arrive. Also if it is the first time the person is arrested they will take photos, prints and DNA samples for the system. This all takes time and is all standard procedure.
Again suspicion of dangerous driving. Someone was killed and that’s what they would out it down to because of where the incident occured. No one knows what happened accept this that saw it, hence the appeal for witnesses. Please can people think before the speak, this is terrible and as the previous messages said, this woman will have to live with this for the rest of her life. Until evidence is found and penalty has been given stop with the unnecessary comments please.
This will affect more than one person.
There you go again, trying to makeup excuses for irisponsible so called drivers, she’s been arrested for a reason….
Yes the reason is “STANDARD PROCEDURE” just like its standard procedure to breathalyse people involved in a accident. What part of that do you not understand the standard part or the procedure part?
The part that says she is an island driver!!! That’s enough evidence for me…..more idiots will be along soon….
God you lot are so thick, you lefty, hand wringing, tree hugging, snowflakes make me sick…you live in cloud kookoo land, every time one of you ignorant drivers go out on the road we are all at risk…
I think you need a hug don’t you?
I think they need a spell check on their posts
Or sectioning! lol.
I’m an Island driver and have been driving for the last 50 years, in that time I have never had an accident that was my fault, so why don’t you climb down off that soap box of yours and stick your head where the sun doesn’t shine.
This poor lady has now been released. Clearly that means they don’t think she’s at fault. Island echo misled everyone in their initial article. No surprise there. More interested in getting “a story” first, rather than “the story” once it’s established. They said they “understand” he was headed to the venue. They don’t have the facts. They speculated.. but they are wrong. Look at the direction of the car… look at the damage from the collision. Bike came from righthand side, headed up from the airport, NOT TO. Innocent driver coming down the hill. Blind bend. Nobody stood a chance to prevent this tragedy.
Letting you know you know f—-k all!
.y thought exactly
What happened to innocent until proven guilty.
With witness accounts… its actually been said the gentleman on the bike was travelling on the wrong side of the road… so how does your theory work now?
RIP to that gentleman! So sad
There are no witnesses ,you make a bullshit comment , I supposed he travelled all the way from Dover on the wrong side of the road because he’s German . Get real .

UNSAFEST Roads in Britain
Actually nowhere near if you look at the stats.
Not if driven and treated with respect!
We do not understand the circumstances of the accident yet and should not judge.
We have tourists that are not familiar with driving our narrow lanes, we have our own doddery drivers that go too ‘carefully’ but scooters have more than their share of stupid riders. Last year I counted the number of times I had to hit the breaks to avoid scooters that shot out of side turnings, overtook on blind bends or pulled in front of my van. Are these sunday riders or just idiots who knows but there could have been five deaths if I had not taken avoiding action. I was thinking of having scooter silhouettes on the door fighter pilot style.
For god sake, show some respect.
R I P young man.
Knobhead
How right you are, today I was waiting at traffic lights in lake, a scooter stopped side of my car, lights changed, good job I didn’t drive straight off, the idiot cut across in front of me and turned left, obviously he was in the wrong
‘Brakes’
Very sad news. Hope the stupid woman responsible gets her license removed, thrown inside for life and never gets to see the light of day again. Another pathetic, thoughtless scumbag off the road is always good news.
Well it’s good that you were there to witness the whole thing..
No need to witness, someone has sadly lost their life due to another muppet on the road, life for a life….simple.
Idiot .no one knows who is to blame yet .wind your neck in you bigoted cretin .
You need to wind your neck with your dumbass comment….prat. Someone has lost their life because of that stupid woman. She deserves prison and removed from society…end of discussion.
Please enlighten us ,clearly you were an eye witness ,and have made a statement. So please show us this evidence that the driver is at fault .
That depends on whether she is actually found guilty of an offence. You obviously don’t know our legal system. So please don’t make stupid assumptions.
Once again… witness reports are showing the biker was travelling on the wrong side of the road…. Please remove your disrespect comment.
Woman could of slowed down?? I’m allowed an opinion even if you don’t like it so keep scrolling you snowflake, you’ll live longer. Lol
This is so sad, RIP. Condolences to his family
So everyone is blaming the girl what about the man, I understand he is dead but have you not seen the way they ride those scooters , all over the place zipping in and out of cars looking back to there mates to see if there behind them and drunk we don’t know the situation
I wish people would be considerate for the family if the man who died
Has anyone considered that the unfortunate young man may have lapsed to left hand drive being late at night. Our island thoughts go out to his family and friends. Perhaps the council may consider reducing the speed limit to 30 with all the campsites etc along a busy twisty stretch of road?
Nobody knows if excessive speed was a factor yet, so a bit premature to talk about cutting the limit.
I’m sorry for all involved but lots of negative comments but no one should be saying cruel things It’s a accident pure and simple no one involved thought this would happen when they met on that road, sadly you can’t turn back time just please leave respectful comments a mans lost his life, think of his relatives please
Rip Mattis, u r scooter friends from London UK. Rip big fellow,
Rip so sad condolences to family and friends
I am a scooterist, I live on the Island and attend the rally every year. The sc ootering scene is a very tight knit bunch and word about the accident spread very quickly. This is was is being circulated about the circumstances of the crash (I don’t know for sure as I wasn’t there but some of my friends were first on the scene) Aparantly the scooter rider was on the wrong side of the road when he hit the car, it was dark and he was from Germany so more than likely he had a lapse of concentraction and forgot what side of the road he was supposed to be on. Please do not blame the car driver, it wasn’t her fault, RIP Mattias
