A serious road traffic collision between a motorcycle and a car has led to the closure of the main Newport to Sandown road at Apse Heath tonight (Thursday).
Island Echo is told that the crash has involved a scooter – similar to those camping at the nearby Sandown Airport for this weekend’s Scooter Rally.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Newport Road, close to the junction with the Willow Brook and Ninham Farm campsite, at just before 21:45.
The road has been closed in both directions from Morrisons Roundabout to the roundabout at Apse Heath and is expected to remain closed until sunrise tomorrow.
Southern Vectis buses are diverting via Canteen Road and Shanklin direct to Lake Shops. The diversion is to operate in both directions. Bus stops from Apse Heath to Newport Road cannot be served in either direction.
Those staying at the campsite are being told they cannot access the site for the time being, however, access to the airport is being maintained.
UPDATE FRIDAY @ 06:33 – Police say they expect the road to re-open by 07:30 this morning.
Recovery of the vehicles is underway.
UPDATE @ 07:58 – Newport Road has now re-opened in both directions.
Southern Vectis buses are returning to a normal route.

Oh no, hope everyone is ok. Unfortunately too many cars on the roads now a days for people on scooters & bikes, sorry to say this but it’s the way I see it.
If you or your family own a car(s) you are also part of the problem. This is the way I see it.
One car per household….simple.
Why have so many disliked Lynda’s comment? I agree with you Lynda. Island roads are just so busy now, increasing amount of cars, it’s inevitable accidents are going to happen. I’m not going to apologise for making this comment because it’s true, sad, but true.
I hope the IOW Council think very long and hard regarding building more homes on this small island, especially huge great developments. We all know what I’m referring to in Ryde!
The I O W council dont give a toss about how many houses they let mainland builders build as long as they get more council tax for the pensions so when they have f–ked up the island they won’t be living here to worry about it
I considered getting my bicycle out this summer to do shopping runs to Newport. I live in Wootton. This was to save petrol. Then it occurred to me that I’d be killed within 100 yards. My bike stayed in the garage.
I don’t drive, never have done. I am a very active senior who walks.
I know what you are trying to say, bikers and cyclists are vulnerable out there without a doubt
Then get some of the cars of the road !!!!
Why can’t they access the camp site? the road serves both places
Possibly part of crime scene i would imagine, sorry for any inconvenience when somebody is seriously injured and how selfish of the police to be doing their jobs of which if it was your relative you would expect the same.
Because this is a serious accident, probably a fatality, hope I’m wrong. So many cars on island roads now and with all the scooterists here, unfortunately a serious accident has occurred so the Police have to preserve the site so they can establish exactly what happened.
It was right outside the campsite entrance.. we were told we could leave our vehicles in Morrisons carpark and walk but this wasn’t the case, totally understood what the police officer was saying when they told us we couldn’t get to the campsite and needed to go back to our vehicles.. so sad to the person involved RIP x
Unfortunately when a road is closed for this length of time it means that the Police are gathering evidence.
So sadly it’s either serious life threatening injuries or a fatality.
All fine and dandy, expect years ago, WITHOUT modern cameras, instant measuring equipment, sat nav for precise location etc and other hi tech devices to enable a rapid image and data collection to access the accident scene roads were not closed for so long a period of time.
The ironic side is, the sentences of anyone IF guilty are far less than they would have been but motorists are disrupted for much longer.
Almost seems like a punishment for the innocent it some vain effort to make them think and drive more carefully, which clearly is failing to work.
Awful for the victims and hope it is not a bad as feared.
You absolute idiot, you obviously have never dealt with anything like this from your armchair as a keyboard warrior have you.
I really hope you dont have to go through anything like this because if you do you will see from your comments how selfish you really are.
Accident involving a scooter now there is a surprise.
Show some respect please. The male scooter rider died RIP
Ignorant idiot !!!
Translation of the above
Because I am part of the family that now has to make sure that everything comes home. The dead body of the scooters. And everything that still falls on us.
Nobody does such a thing on purpose whether the streets are full or not doesn’t matter.
Shit hapts. My condolences are with my stepson and his mother as well as with the rest of the family. But also a piece with the lady in the car. She didn’t want to take anyone’s life as she and car got up.
Kuno, my cincere condolences to you and your extended family. I don’t know the full extent of your trip over here but expect it to be one of the first holiday’s your stepson had after lockdowns. It is tragic that ANYONE has to die but I can’t get the thought of your poor stepson out of my mind. He came over here for a nice holiday with you but it ended in tragedy. If you read this then please feel all our heart-felt thoughts to your family from everyone on this island. Lots of love my friend.
i Hope seh was Not Drunk Ort Full of dope

yes gif Respekt RIP
eel sorry for the rider, but there are far too many bad drivers on this Island. Many look but do not see… or think..
Numerous scooters swung out and zoomed past me and other cars in a long line yesterday, all of them exceeding the speed limit to do so, swinging in again just in time to avoid smashing into oncoming traffic. If motorcyclists and scooterists stayed in place behind vehicles in norman traffic circumstances there would be no fatal crashes of the kind that are ever increasing in number on this once safe island. . .
