A man has been charged following a serious assault in Newport that left a man in his 50s with head injuries earlier this week.
As previously reported by Island Echo, Police sealed off part of Melbourne Street during the early hours of Tuesday morning after the victim was allegedly assaulted at around midnight. Emergency services attended the scene and a large cordon remained in place while investigations were carried out.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says it received a report at 00:06 on Tuesday 9th June that a man in his 50s had been assaulted and suffered injuries to his head on Melbourne Street, Newport.
The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and has since been discharged. He is now recovering at home.
Following enquiries, officers arrested and charged Ian Harry Willett, 27, of Newport Road in Ventnor.
Willett has been charged with grievous bodily harm (GBH), robbery and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.
He was remanded in custody to appear before Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court today (Saturday), with updates on his case expected in the coming days.
