Young footballers from the Isle of Wight have been crowned champions at one of the UK’s biggest grassroots football tournaments after an unbeaten run across an action-packed weekend in Bognor Regis.
Vectis U9s travelled to Butlin’s to take part in an ESF football tournament alongside 27 other teams from across the country, with 4 Vectis sides making the trip to West Sussex.
After 2 days of competition, the Isle of Wight youngsters emerged victorious in the under-9 category – a major achievement against strong opposition from across the county and beyond.
The team impressed throughout the tournament, scoring freely while not conceding a single goal across 8 games.
Their success means they have now earned the opportunity to compete in the prestigious ‘Grande Finale’ Champions of Champions Cup at St George’s Park – the home of England’s national football teams.
The one-day event brings together 8 winners from ESF tournaments held around the country and takes place at what are regarded as some of the finest football facilities in the world.
The squad’s commitment, teamwork and attitude were praised throughout the weekend, both on and off the pitch, with players and parents enjoying what was described as a superb trip.
The victorious Vectis U9s squad was made up of Lenny Doughty, Charlie Breingan, Kian Hartnell, Fred Cantelo, Kai Gregory, Felix Cook, Jaxon Pearce, Reggie Sawyer, Henry Senior and Ollie Upton.
The team is managed by Ross Gregory, assisted by Stuart Breingan.
