A 45-year-old man has been arrested by Police after officers swooped on a Transit van being illegally driven in Wootton this afternoon (Thursday).
At around 17:00, a number of Police vehicles surrounded a Ford Transit on Lushington Hill in what has been described as a proactive stop.
It’s understood that officers smashed the driver’s side window to gain quick entry to the vehicle.
It has been confirmed that the van was being driven on false plates and contained within was an offensive weapon and 3 bladed articles – knives.
Furthermore, the driver was arrested on motoring offences including driving without a licence and driving without insurance.
The male has been taken into custody at Newport Police Station for questioning.
UPDATE FRIDAY – 45-year-old Brian Bailey, of no fixed abode, has been charged with numerous offences including driving a motor vehicle otherwise than in accordance with a licence, fraudulently using a registration mark, obstructing/resisting a constable in the execution of their duty, possessing Class B drugs, and driving while uninsured.
No further action is being taken in respect of possession of an offensive weapon and 3 counts of possession of a bladed article.
Bailey will appear in court on Tuesday 15th November. He has been given bail until that time.

I think it’s terrible.
Leave him in the cells, lights off, no food, no bedding!
Excellent stop. This will give all the other non payers of Tax, MOT and Insurance something to think about. Pay like every responsible motorist or face some ‘special’ attention from the island’s Police force!
More pigs ruining everything
Oh do shut up. If you haven’t any respect for the Police then you must be a law breaker up to no good skanky business.
Anarchy does not rule and is not cool
Will they crush the van ??
Well done police, keep it up, stop and search, hound the rubbish that blight peoples lives as much as possible, its the only way to do things, pity the courts are so feeble..
what will happen to him??…next to nothing..
So it’s ok to carry an offensive weapon and knives? Ridiculous.
Smashed windows, there goes his sleeping home. Why was he given bail, do all drug users get bail? Is it ok to drive without insurance, false number plates etc etc – why bail?
I expect he was sleeping in his van which means that hte council will probably use our money and find him accommodation
Check out Bembridge point car park now. Full of tatty vans and the occupants now using the car park to repair cars.
They sleep there and live in these vans and as private land the Police or the owner being Mr Thorpe who owns the harbour does nothing about it
The low life are growing in number
