The Isle of Wight NHS Trust has issued a warning about the precarious state of health services across the Island, with a ‘perfect storm’ taking the pressure on St Mary’s Hospital to critical levels.
Health bosses say the impact is ‘unprecedented’ and are now appealing to local residents for help. Islanders are being urged to call NHS 111 first and only call 999 if they have a serious or life-threatening condition or injury.
It’s said that St Mary’s is full and that a lack of care home places locally means not all patients can be discharged. Families and loved ones are being asked to support in collecting patients from the hospital as soon as they are ready to be discharged.
The Trust has confirmed that it has cancelled some planned operations and if the situation doesn’t improve more Islanders may have their surgery delayed so that it has the staff and beds available to ensure the safety of its patients.
Juliet Pearce, Chief Nurse, at Isle of Wight NHS Trust, said:
“St Mary’s Hospital and NHS services across the Island are under unprecedented pressure and we need to be honest with Islanders about what that means.
“Our hospital is full, and our teams are working extremely hard to find beds for everyone that needs them, but sadly this means that some people are waiting far longer than we would like in our Emergency Department.
“Pressure is being felt outside the NHS too and there are dozens of people in hospital today who could be better cared for somewhere else, but there aren’t places in nursing and residential care for them to be discharged safely.”
“The heat wave is making things even more challenging as people who may already be poorly need hospital care and we are appeal to Islanders to take the right precautions to safeguard themselves by drinking water, staying out of the sun, and keeping cool.
“In addition, high rates of COVID-19 in the community and the knock-on effects of staff sickness in the NHS are all contributing to this perfect storm of pressure.”

only one step away from a weather based lockdown.
Freedom is slavery.
12 years of Tory cutbacks hasn’t helped either!!
This has been happening a good 30 years believe me!
Labour actually took NHS spending from 4.64% at the end of the Major administration to 7.59%, the highest it has ever been, when the Tories took over. It has fallen every year since.
So, no, I don’t believe you.
Still voting Tory
NHS in Wales and Scotland run by Labour, same situation, long waiting times and ops cancelled. If Labour get in they will let more into country creating even longer waiting times
It was only in the last two years that billions have been given to the NHS and all their debts cancelled. It is more to do with how the dozens and dozens of managers are spending the money
I know let’s allow in more refugees and allow all the illegals to stay and, whilst doing so, let’s pay all these people even more for every child they produce.
That will help……won’t it?
OK Karen.
thank our lazy doctors hiding away then! so loads been jabbed but in with covid?hmmm …staff off with it???that says useless face nappies dont work even on the staff then and the same elderly in with it prob caught it in.there.not exactly clean is it
and taking away beds but the money gets spent on pointless managers what with too much mainland overspill and housebuilding…we’re nevergoing too have a hospital fit for purpose are we
They aren’t lazy, they’ve gone, quit, retired or moved away.
Sick of poor working conditions and abuse.
No they have not they have all gone to private sector i had to book a private appointment to se about my problem and the doctor i met was my old NHS doctor
I tried to book my 2 monthly blood test through my doctors surgery as usual only to be told that because it is a rheumatology nurse requesting (due to change of medication)it has to be done at the hospital, the doctors surgery will only do blood test if they have requested it. Phoned NHS Trust and they said I could have it done at the doctors. So who is right. As I am immunosuppressive I would prefer to avoid the busy Hospital with an upsurge in Covid. UTTER MADNESS
I sounds like you spoke to the receptionist who try to act as mini doctors, ask for the nurse or doctor to call you to give their professional advice on what you should do as it sounds like your being palmed off to me.
Had the same problem at Freshwater surgery
Here we go again, all part of the plan.
N.W.O
It wasn’t too long ago that kind of comment would have you down voted into almost triple figures. Haha how times change.
What’s the difference between a “conspiracy theory” and the truth?
About 6 months.
It really is time the island created a retirement village that is equipped to deal with elderly on all levels, if some part was independent warden assistance another part release from hospital after care another area for dementia care. If this was thought through and done with a nursing team on site Doctors shops hairdressers etc it would release more housing stop bed blocking in the hospital end loneliness for some. The improvements in being elderly on this island would be immense.
Wonder if our MP Bob Seely has anything to say about it? For once I’d like to hear his view.
He’s probably at a Barbeque.
It is the silly season after all, St Marys has always been like this since the dawn of time but now its really bad and its all our fault you filthy ill sick people, next its facemasks to make these goons feel better and socialy elevated .. ‘for Its the only way the sheep did baa’..wonder what they are going to do with all those shots that boris bought off his billionaire chums..???? i wonder; ….so roll them wooley sleeves up lambchops, its safe as..lol
St Mary’s isn’t fit for purpose, hasn’t been for some time and doubt it ever will be.
Yes your right Bob, its no better now than it was when I lost my Mum back in 2013.
Very true.
Vets give Pets better care
I expect St Mary’s are always under extra pressure this time of year because of a large amount of visitors, we only have one Hospital and they continue to build thousands of houses…
Very soon now the authorities will have to concede that they have closed too many beds at St Mary’s. The population is growing and there is a backlog of patients waiting for appointments following Covid. We must push the managers to open at least two wards, then transfer some managers back to where they would rather be – on the wards – and let’s get on with what hospitals are for and get the patients well again. And don’t build any more housing developments until we get the ratio right.
Two occasions in the last 6 months, with GPs not available we called 111 but there was no one available to take our calls !!!. We HAD to call 999 and were brilliantly dealt with
This island needs more than one hospital,oh sorry they had more than one ,but they shut them to save money, now they can’t even run one !!! something needs to be done ASAP
If you have your operation cancelled, you might like to think of it as the silver lining to a particular cloud.
I know of someone who recently underwent surgery at st Mary’s, the infection they gave him whilst ‘under the knife’ nearly killed him, and it has left life changing injuries.
Cleanliness is severely lacking due to corners being cut.
If it were a restaurant, youd give it a miss!
Let the viral Tiktok dances commence….
Somebody it seems didn’t like my comment they say the truth hurts so think on your deeds
This island is going to he’ll in a hand basket you editor must love the NHS
With there £1000 locomes for Dr’s the NHS is not a religion it is a job like any other if they can’t manage then so beit get some one who can manage like every other business on the island
Run the NHS like a business, eh?
You know businesses are run for profit, right?
If it isn’t profitable, you don’t do it.
If it takes too many resources, don’t do it.
If it puts you at risk of legal action, don’t do it.
You want the NHS run like that?
NB: It is already going that way with more and more NHS work being outsourced to private hospitals and medical companies, often owned by Tory donors and chums of ministers. So your wish is starting to come true. Also worth noting that this is more expensive than doing the same operations in-house and if something goes wrong you will still end up in an NHS A&E.
Bring in the army and get this crap with operations sorted out you didn’t see the mash hospital running around like headless chickens with injured men being operated on and they did more operations in a day and the injoured didn’t get infections NHS get on with it and be glad you have a job
St Marys is always under unprecedented pressure at all times of the year, the only thing that changes is the excuses used to justify turning people away.
less immigrants, less benefit spongers moving to the island, would solve most of the issues.
Have you been in A&E recently?
The only “immigrants” are the staff and most of the patients are over 70.
But, hey, why let facts get in the way of a good old fashioned xenophobic rant, eh?
Can you actually make reasonable comments, your comments are based around ” benefit spongers” and “immigrants”.
This island would have far less hospital staff if all “immigrants” you refer to left, this is the case across many hospitals in the UK.
” Benefit spongers” is your usual rant, you come across as a very bitter individual and use news articles to express your prejudice, I take it you do understand the Island has a considerable population of older people and they require the NHS services more than the average Island resident. You choose to ignore facts.
Had a number of run-ins with wighter. Has an enormous chip on his shoulder.
Guessing he’s badly messed up his own life and wants to blame it on someone, so immigrants, the unemployed, single mothers, “wokes” (or whatever he thinks a “woke” is), socialists, etc, all get it in spades on any article that he can even remotely connect one of his pet peeves to.
You can’t keep throwing money at the NHS it needs to be properly managed and consultants need to be paid less money most doctors sit at desks in stead of working on patients
Hmm, and what do you think will happen if you try to cut consultant pay, eh?
Plenty of work in the private sector and overseas.
There is a shortage in specialists in multiple disciplines, which means it’s a buyer’s market. That shortage was caused by this Government.
How many of the visits to the hospital could be sorted out at the drs if they did what they were paid to do ? When I actually managed to get into the surgery,it was empty except for one other person, so where were the patients putting pressure on the practice???
Kick the bedblockers back to the council ant let them deal with it
The hospital is broken there is not enough room its just a house of infection st scaries some one has just got to take this stupid situation in hand ffs and stop procrastinating and get on with it
The answer is simple this island needs more than one hospital
This Hospital is archaic needs closing down and re built as purpose built General Hospital . I am not living there at present my family are and my Father and Brother sadly buried there I tried about 18months ago to find out why no surgical cancer teams were based there ? I wrote to this present Government.asking why people that are being sick and cold and frightened still need to go across to the mainland ? The island needs its own Surgeons to join service . The junior person I assume replying under the Tory policy(letter kept) told me to check with the local CCG responsible what a joke 22 emails later and months of requests NOTHING !!
Call the Army in its your only chance of redemption
