The 2nd oldest carnival in the UK, Ventnor Carnival, has received a shock bill to close the many roads along its route.
Ventnor Carnival – which has been going since 1889 – recently received a bill for £400 as a result of new fees introduced by the local authority.
The committee say they didn’t know about the new fees and that they would have to pay for the event to go ahead due to there being no carnivals in 2021.
However, Councillor Phil Jordan has offered a solution, which has been accepted. The charge has been cut by 50% to £200, by putting both the main and illuminated processions on a single piece of paperwork. Furthermore, the carnival committee don’t have to pay up until 2023.
An Isle of Wight Council spokesperson has said:
“The cost of a parking suspension is £20 per space per day. The council’s parking department wishes to support events, therefore making a nominal charge of £50 per street irrespective of the number of bays.
“In previous years, the council have undertaken the parking suspensions free of charge for Ventnor Carnival based on historic knowledge of the route, rather than a direct request from Ventnor Carnival Association.
“The council reached out to organisers to ensure they were aware of the costs. Ventnor Carnival has since made contact and the authority has offered a number of options to either avoid or reduce the charges.
“The Isle of Wight is fortunate to have so many diverse and colourful parades, and we work hard to support as much as possible, but in a time of considerable budget pressures need to cover costs and not impact on providing essential services.”
The main procession and the children’s carnival are to be held on 10th August, with the illuminated carnival to be held 3 days later on the 13th August.

well done greedy council….living up too your name 100%
Ventnor is a horrible place there is only drunks and ASB there.
Thank heavens you’re an ex-Islander…
Arent you suppose to be on TV
It’s true,it’s full of smack rat’s like me.lol
Nothing to be proud Isham of you are the lowest of the low. You and your type are responsible of huge amounts of public money being wasted on your so called care. Money that could be directed to those that deserve it.
YEP, 5000 alcoholics clinging to a cliff.
Stay were you are then ex and don’t comment idiot
Best option, unfortunately, is to cancel and place full responsibility on the council.
How much more money does the council receive from increased parking surrounding the route? The carnival attracts more people into the town and they have to park somewhere.
I would ask to see the parking revenues from previous years before paying up.
Perhaps IF they had allowed the cheaper option of weed killer rather than expensive manual labour to remove weeds, the council would be more forgiving.
Rumour is, Ventnor residents got wind that an effective ‘weed’ control was about to be implemented by the Council, and the residents assumed the worse, and went into blind panic.
How much is the Tour of Britain paying then? Must be a huge bill. Come on council, transparency please.
I hope, in this age of equality, they will also be charging the tour of Britain for road closures?
Thought not.
Dreadful council and all its minions.
Well at least he council reduced the fees by half and gave them until 2023 to pay.
Can I have 50% off my Council Tax then?
Clearly one rule for them and one for us? Are all IWC arbitrary now??
Yes we don’t get alot for are council tax no roads cleaned any more no road police it’s just becoming a mess over here litter everywhere
Wow how amazing are our council????
Everyone has had such a tough time recently with covid , lock down ,and now inflation through the roof , no end in sight!!!!!!
Just once could these money grabbing twits ( polite version)
Wave this fee so people can have some pleasure in life ?????
Thought not , half price wow total greed , but no surprise …..
How about charging shite fibre re all there rd closures ?
Would make a fortune….
Probably sat in a meeting and one greedy mite says ‘what shall we charge them?’ ‘£200’ says another, ‘But it won’t look good so, we’ll say £400 then when there’s an outcry we’ll drop it to £200, then we will look as if we give a shit instead of just being money grabbing bastards and everyone will be happy.’
Wow unbelievable !!!
£200 is such a piddling stupid amount why even bother to charge it? – It will cost more to administer and account for it FFS. Pathetic but totally unsurprising.
Well if the council didn’t waste so much money
then they could afford to fund this historic event .
Phil Jordan and many other councillors work really hard to do good things, in the face of massive Tory cuts to local government expenditure. If you ignorant moaners can do better, please take a turn as a Councillor.
Funniest thing I have ever read on here.
Doesn’t each council member have a members fund that they could donate a portion each towards this ‘historic’ event? They have no shame sat up there in their ivory towers rubbing their hands in glee. Wicked council.
Why doesn’t this council save a few bob by asking Wight Fibre not to relay the pavement after they have dug up half of it and patched it after which the council have come along a month later to rip it all up again. I thought we were meant to be the green Island. The time saved could be used to start repairing the supposedly good roads we are meant to be getting under the Island Roads deal.
I thought the Council just made 1.3 million profit from their 35 million mainland investments? Surely they could suck up a few lost parking fees, for 1 night?
I’ve never heard of a local council not supporting a local carnival before. They should be proud of the work and effort their town has put into raising money for charity. That really is the lowest of the low!
