Firefighters are tackling a tree fire in Totland this morning (Wednesday), thought to have been started by a bolt of lightning.
1 pumping appliance and a water carrier – both from Freshwater – are currently on scene at Witches Wood near to Court Road and Summers Lane.
Crews are working hard to extinguish the fire, which has developed within the tree itself. The tree has been severely damaged by the strike and subsequent fire.
The area has been cordoned off whilst the incident is ongoing. There are also road closures in the area.
UPDATE @ 09:05 – The fire has now been extinguished, however, Witches Wood is to remain closed due to safety fears.
Court Road and Summers Lane have re-opened to traffic in all directions.

I used to live in Summers Lane around 40 years ago and I’ve never heard of Witches Wood. Could someone please let me know its location.
