Island motorists are reminded that Island Roads will be resuming its road improvement works programme today (Monday), with major road closures in Ryde and Newport.
Schemes in Newport Upper High Street and Binstead Road will begin this morning, while the major project to improve the main road through Wroxall – due to begin today – has been pushed due to emergency works on Church Road, Shanklin.
All projects involve deeper than usual excavations to address the underlying conditions that have seen the highway deteriorate in each location. This means that full 24-hour road closures will be required for the duration of works.
Binstead Road
The work in Binstead will see major sections of the road between Ringwood Road and Gwydyr Close improved.
Phase 1 to improve the section between Ringwood Road and Stonepitts Close is programmed to take place between until 30th January. The second phase between Stonepitts Close and Gwydyr Close is scheduled to begin on 13th April and last until 24th April.
The work is being split to accommodate Southern Water works at Elenors Grove which is scheduled for between 2nd February 2 and 10th April.
The official diversion during the project will be signed and is via Wootton, Downend, The Downs, Brading and into Ryde. Motorists are asked not to use the Binstead Estate as an alternative as these roads are not suitable for high volumes of traffic, although it is anticipated that many will – with no waiting at anytime restrictions coming into force on Jellicoe Road, Wellington Road and Binstead Lodge Road.
Upper High Street, Newport
At Newport High Street, the work will see the Upper High Street closed between its Pyle Street and St James junctions – effectively making the section a pedestrianised area during the scheme.
Work is scheduled to last eight working days (not including weekends). To assist businesses with deliveries and access during the project, Mill Street will be made two-way between High Street and Lugley Street (though there will be no entry to the High Street). The local diversion into town is via Gunville Road, Forest Road and Medina Way.
Wroxall
Following a break for the Christmas and New Year holiday to support local trade and to provide relief to residents, the work to rebuild and resurface the main road through Wroxall was due to resume today, covering the section between Station Road and Coombe Park.
However, emergency water works in Shanklin have led to the decision to delay the resumption of works in Wroxall.
When works get underway, the main access out of Wroxall will be via Ventnor so additional time should be allowed for affected journeys.
Island Roads wishes to thank road users, residents and business in advance for their understanding during these works and will continue to keep the community informed of progress.
Residents are also reminded that, though every effort will be made to keep to schedule, factors such as the weather and ground conditions can affect the programme.

Whoever is in charge of the signage should be sacked! No one knows how to get out ryde without all going through havenstreet not everybody knows this! There’s a sign on green st saying go in the direction of Tescos! Utterly ridiculous, and quite frankly dangerous!
