A number of vital morning services on Island Line have been cancelled this morning (Friday) due to a member of traincrew being unavailable.
A lack of staff on the Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin network has been causing problems for several months, despite a major £26million investment in the railway.
An hourly service is in operation between 05:30 and 09:00 this morning as a result of the staffing issues.
The following trains are cancelled:
- 06:05 Ryde St Johns Road to Ryde Esplanade.
- 06:14 Ryde Esplanade to Shanklin.
- 06:48 Shanklin to Ryde Esplanade.
- 07:14 Ryde Esplanade to Shanklin.
- 07:48 Shanklin to Ryde Esplanade.
- 08:14 Ryde Esplanade to Shanklin.
- 08:48 Shanklin to Ryde St Johns Road.
South Western Railway say they are very sorry for any delay that this may cause to your journey.

You can’t help sickness on island line
Seems like it all ran better before the upgrade.
Yer, because nothing else happened in the world that could have affected staff moral and or health.
3 return trips on a train that is generally empty, judging by the amount of people on it when I use it. Hardly a deal breaker
That’s the thing about essential services, they often run well below capacity so that when needed they can coupe. Bit like the NHS used to work before Thatcher did a round trip of the UK visiting all the hospitals and the closed all the wards.
You do realise that Thatcher ceased being Prime Minister in 1990? That’s 32 years ago. Successive governments, Labour, Conservative and coalition, have had plenty of opportunity to make changes. You really do need to move on and stop trying to blame someone who has not been in government for decades.
You do realise that the NHS had some of the highest patient satisfaction ratings, ever, at the end of the last Labour Government.
It now has the lowest ever (at what will hopefully be the end of this despicable Tory Government).
You do need to pull your head out of the sands and realise that the current awful state of the NHS is entirely down to Tory cuts and Tory mismanagement.
When no one is able to move to the island to full fill staffing for essential services, this is what happens. Well done NIMBY lot. You’re killing the island.
What do you mean ‘no one is able to move to the island’? According to Rightmove there’s over 1,000 properties of all descriptions, sizes and prices for sale on the Island. And, if I remember correctly, train drivers are not exactly badly paid. So, why exactly do you say that no-one can move here?
Having an entire staff complement permanently sick warrants investigation, surely.
