Morning commuters have faced yet another day of travel disruption due to the one-way system in place on Staplers Road in Newport.
Delays of up to 25 minutes are being reported on Southern Vectis buses today (Wednesday) with traffic backing up along Fairlee Road, Racecourse and Lushington Hill to Wootton High Street. Yesterday the queues reached as far as Fishbourne.
Traffic that would normally enter Newport via Staplers Road is currently being diverted via Fairlee Road or Blackwater Road. The westbound closure is to allow Southern Water to carry out water main renewal works between School Lane and Mayfield Drive. The road remains open for traffic leaving Newport heading east.
This morning temporary traffic lights were set up at Arreton Cross in a bid to help vehicles flow off The Downs and out towards Blackwater, but Island Echo readers have said this has added to the delays in the area. The lights have now been switched off.
Island residents are calling for action to be taken to ease the disruption which is set to last for at least the next 4 months. Many have said that Staplers Road should be open for traffic heading into Newport, whilst others have suggested Furrlongs is made one-way.
Motorists should note that Furrlongs and Mayfield Drive are both open and are alternative routes to Arreton/Blackwater or Wootton/Fairlee Road. Burnt House Lane is also open.
