Tour of Britain, which was due to take place on the Isle of Wight this Sunday, has been CANCELLED following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.
In a statement released by Tour of Britain tonight (Thursday), they have announced that the remaining stages, which include the Isle of Wight, have been cancelled.
“Further to the earlier statement in relation to the cancellation of stage six as a mark of respect following the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, the organisers of the AJ Bell Tour of Britain can additionally confirm that stages seven (Dorset) and eight (Isle of Wight) will not take place.
“This decision has been taken in consultation with stakeholders and partners in light of operational circumstances, including the understandable reassignment of police resource at this time.
“Therefore, the final standings will be taken following the conclusion of stage five on Thursday 8 September. The winner of the AJ Bell Tour of Britain 2022 will be Gonzalo Serrano (Movistar Team).
“Additionally, the respective classification leaders – Tom Pidcock (Dodl by AJ Bell points), Mathijs Paasschens (ŠKODA King of the Mountains) and Matthew Teggart (Sportsbreaks.com sprints) – will also be declared the winners of those competitions.
“The Tour of Britain organisation, alongside the teams, riders and officials involved in the event, send their deepest condolences to the Royal Family at this sad time.”
90 minutes prior to this announcement, the Tour of Britain organisers had already decided to cancel tomorrow’s (Friday’s) event between Tewkesbury and Gloucester.

Out of total respect it was the right decision to make.
There are no words to say, think the whole world is absolutely heartbroken. RIP Queen Elizabeth II ( Our queen ) XXX
Well I for one am not, so speak for yourself.
Show respect, not ignorance.
“think the whole world is absolutely heartbroken”
Behave, yer, sad for the family, as it would be for any family. But for the whole world? You’re delusional and statement is pure hyperbole.
Jamaica and Australia may have a different point of view to name but a view.
Lol ‘the whole world’
life goes on…
There’s a silver lining to every cloud..
Agreed! Lol
Let me reassure you. You’re not big, you’re not clever, and you’re certainly not funny. What you are, is a pathetic and extremely infantile little boy!
Stuart smoke weed every day
Pitiful!
Bird bird bird is the word
Glen isham your nothing but a wet wipe
King Charlie says glen ur a scum bag
Smoke to much today
This is excellent news.we’ve got our island roads back.yay
Dick head
yes, i have heard of G Isham I am sad to say
Well who would have expected that!! So to all you moaners, nimbys and generally miserable folk who didn’t want this/made threats of throwing nails on the road etc etc – jeez I bet you’re SO happy. RIP our lovely, lovely Queen. A sad day. But no doubt there will be plenty of you celebrating….
We would rather our own dear Queen were still alive
Yep, pretty much
What a bonus don’t have to put up with all the cyclists thank god for small mercys
The cycling mafia are out in force today but many agree with you
Someone had to die for you to get your own way, hope you are very happy
This a very sad time for all ,The loss of Queen Elizabeth ,but to cancel the event has cost already struggling business many thousands and we will now loose these as maybe unable to stand the losses, some have taken out loans in anticipation of this event bringing in some money. It could of continued out of honour of our queen – a British event bringing the world together. Not sure she would want this either. When I die I don’t want it causing problems and affecting others.
Good! Bloody hate cyclists
Probably not as much as I hate car drivers
Show some respect? If you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything at all!!!
Get out and take down the signs, perhaps AJ Bell would like to reimburse the councils expenses? (Our money)
Wrong! The council didn’t pay, the sponsor paid for all signs & road closures, all part of the application, do your homework! slack!
I’ve triggered little miss know it all, lol.
I wouldn’t say she was triggered, but she certainly proved you wrong, unlucky, take it on the chin!
The point is road closures shouldn’t be authorised so widely on our already small and crowded Island – the people who live here should not have to put up with such disruption just because companies have paid to do so.
send the overners back, that’ll free up some space!
Yes! That’s what I like to hear!! Northern ones first.
No, the point of the conversation is that the IW Council didn’t pay for signage or road closures, minimal disruption to the odd nimby isn’t relevant to what was stated.
Factually, the council was endeavouring to cover the cost of £340,000 that it cost to bring the race to the island , they have never said whether they covered their costs.
Factually I’m endeavouring to win the lottery, what a lame answer!
Yes it’s sad that a great lady has now been lost BUT to cancel this event after so much effort/money has been ploughed into it is criminal! So many pubs/shops/any establishment who had decided to put on events for the spectators etc will loose so much now. There could of been ways for the riders/organisers to mark their respect! It’s not as though it’s the day after her passing and I’m sure the great lady her self would of wanted it to go ahead as a sports enthusiast herself….
.I heard that the horse racing is back on on Sunday
So are the British superbikes, live on tv too. That’s what I will be watching, not all this mourning nonsense.
Good decision for an event that in real terms would of done nothing for the island anyway, except cause mayhem, chaos and more than a few accidents.
The decision to cancel such events will cost hospitality etc millions in the next few weeks.
I am sure the Queen would not want to add even more financial hardship to her subjects.
There should be a celebration of the Queen’s long and healthy life from the public.
For those residents of the IOW who were bemoaning a cycling event for one days minor disruption, you should consider what tourism does to your island and look at the environmental benefits to everyone who prefers to cycle rather than drive around polluting the planet even further.
We also consider how the idiots in lycra who “prefer to cycle” block up our roads and behave with utter selfishness for other road users while moaning that they get no respect. The fewer of them on our roads the better. And the disruption would have been major, not minor, even if it was for just one day.
Thing is what’s the ratio of car accidents to bicycle accidents is far more ….and after the dozen or so cars rolled over for whatever reason recently….were not caused by cyclists…
What has that got to do with anything?
Oh, for goodness sake, get off your high horse. You speak as if car uses have all the rights, and the cyclists should be grateful to take to the roads, when your not about.. Whats wrong with people like you. Wake up, open your eyes wide, breathe in tje fresh air for once, try it for yourself instead of sitting in your car. Excellent exercise. We are all in titled to the road. Even walkers, ramblers.
There was a time when the island wasn’t invaded by arrogant DFLS down here to look for 2nd homes. We did alright then and we can again now.
Totally agree. Hear! hear.! From a regular cyclist.
Out of respect to Her Majesty the Queen it was the right decision to make. However, it is a great shame for the Island as we will no longer get the TV exposure and the associated tourism that this Island & its businesses so desperately need.
What’s to show them, an Island that closes it’s toilets early and locks disabled toilets.
An atrocity like Sandown
Better the world does not see it.
All that whinging and negativity for nothing then. The moaners got their own way at least. Can’t believe people are still going at it with the nastiness.
so are you in a way.
Post body lmao
Why hello dusty Willy
What a winner! If we can’t have the motorcycles this should never have been given the green light.
Reading comments from the pro race lobby, ha ha lol!
Karma maybe for the councils behaviour towards the diamond races??
Wondering if hursts will give me a refund on all those tacks? 🙂
Hursts? Don’t make me laugh, you’ve got Home Bargains written all over you!
Bloody snob.
Thank **** for that.
It was a ridiculous idea to host on the Island
Take those dangerous signs down.
R.I.P Queen Elizabeth
Some people take such pride in being the nastiest version of themselves they can be judging by the comments; feel sorry for their spouses..
The Queen represented grace and standards, they do not
“The Queen represented grace and standards”
Tell that to the descendants of the slaves brought and sold that her family directly profited from. She never accepted her role in that and never apologised for it. Her bank balance is drenched in blood.
And let us not forget the charles and camilla letters, they have been conveniently forgotten about, and now he is the king, no wonder the UK is a laughing stock behind closed doors.
i’m afraid the wearing of lycra and disrespect for others goes hand in hand…..
Thank god for that, i hate cyclists at the best of time, this really is the best news since sliced bread.
Who would police the race?
The keystone cops
At least some good came out of the the Queen’s death .
So typical of Islanders not to show respect to our Queen of 70 years. She became Queen 2 months before I was born In Kings Rd, East Cowes. Show some respect you trolls
Regardless of the reasons the cancellation will have a hugely h negative effect on the IOW, as already said the loss of revenue to accomadation, eateries, and other sales, will run into millions, plus and something that can not have a price put on it, it was a chance to showcase the island to millions of television viewers and all that entails, and for those who wish to close the doors and pull up the drawbridge and sink the ferries and hover, that feudal idea died years ago.
I’m not from the island but used to visit every year for a week as my auntie lived in Ryde. I love the island and was looking forward to watching on Sunday and am disappointed about the cancellation. It’s a great shame your beautiful island won’t be shown on TV for 5 hours on Sunday and that businesses will lose out. It’s frustrating to see some people who drive cars having a real go at cyclists because they might get held up for a few seconds – have some patience. Yes, you might get the odd bit of stupidity from some groups but most cyclists just want to get out on their own and get some exercise in the open air.
Where are all the comments ?
No-one has congratulated Gonzalo Serrano, Tom Pidcock, Mathijs Paasschens, and Matthew Teggart for their victories, and the other competitors for a most magnificent race. I’m just sorry it had to end this way. But if you google “Ride the Isle – the song for Tour of Britain” you will hear a wonderful tribute to the event that never will be… Unless it comes next year.
Totally the right decision, RIP Queen Elizabeth II. Daft idea in the first place, cyclists belong on CYCLE paths NOT the road. Win win for normal everyday people on the road. Would of done nothing for the Island anyway…lol
Would HAVE done something for the island
Nope, totally WRONG. lol
All smoke ya bud ,sniff ur white and hailed ur kung
I am saddened beyond words for some of the comments on here. I cannot say any more as my last post was deleted by the PC moderators.
