A toilet roll that was set on fire within the toilets of a primary school in Ryde prompted an emergency response by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service earlier this afternoon (Thursday).
4 appliances from Ryde, Newport and Sandown were mobilised to Greenmount Primary School on St Vincent’s Road at 14:17 following reports of smoke issuing from the toilet block on the eastern side of the building.
The first crews on scene – from Ryde – ascertained the fire had already been extinguished.
Other resources were stood down en-route.
The stop message was put in at 14:37.

Must have eaten a curry in Eastern Eye.
The little arsonist brats start real young these days
How in a primary school could someone set toilet paper on fire
Well there are multiple ways to start a fire. The simplest would be to use a lighter or a match. However I hear rubbing two sticks together can work eventually. Once a flame has been ignited you bring it close to the toilet roll which should catch light without too much difficulty. I hope that clears things up for you.
Are you sure it’s not 2 Boy Scouts
No shit shirlock how can they get the resources for that tho
Well lighters and matches can be purchased from many stores including convenience stores and / or supermarkets. Now I do understand that these products are age restricted so in that instance they can be obtained from an older friend or relative or may of just been left laying around the house. Lighters are also fairly commonly found just laying around on the pavements.
Apparently it was shoved in a hand dryer, got hot and started a fire
So, as this is a Primary school, it should be easy to establish which pupils were out of class and could have been the culprit, with a suitable punishment quickly following. Let’s hope so, if the’re doing this at Primary school what on earth will they think they can get away with at Secondary school. Doesn’t bear thinking about.
Yes an arsonist can escalate their intended sites. Hope the police catch him/her before someone dies in a fire but the police usually put it down to childish pranks until someone dies.
well that’s the most exciting thing that’s happened on the IoW for a few days ….
I expect somebody pissed on it and put it out
Appliances from Newport and Sandown driving at speed could of killed someone, the little person who did this needs to learn possible consequences of their actions and be spoken to by Police as well.
Feral brat won’t give a monkey’s about a “chat” from the Police!!
I’d just execute him, Mary.
And maybe execute his siblings as well, just in case.
Maybe parents, aunts, uncles too. Can’t be too careful when clamping down on “Feral brats”.
Damn it all, lets just euthanise everyone under 30 and be done with it.
(Yes, that was sarcasm. Sad that I have to flag it but IE commentards aren’t the smartest).
That’ll be one day exclusion for that young ruffian – standard practice.
Say it. You know you want to… “Bring back the birch”
I’d rather there was zero tolerance like expulsion. When they run out of schools to trash the parents can have them back full-time.
An isolated incident one that many kids will attempt weather in a toilet or anywhere else and you lot think he gonna turn into the east cowes arsonist hahaha hey maybe we should host a yearly event where someone from hr comes in and does a demonstration on the dangers of fire
Sangu,, that’s the WORST spell of whether (weather) I have seen for a while!
I’m afraid that’s Isle of Wight education for you. Teachers can’t spell themselves so what hope do the pupils have? I’ve had to correct my granddaughter’s spelling for her.
What’s the weather got to do with it?
Only on the IOW this makes breaking news!
Need to get out a bit more lol
Low life vandalising criminal trash don’t ‘just’ magically appear at teenage.
Even Putin was once an innocent little babe.
Needs expelling and then get the parent, or more unlikely parents to fund its attempted education from it’s tax credits and child allowance.
4 appliances from 3 fire stations.
An bit of an overreaction?
Jesus. A small child causes a fire which is quickly extinguished and some of you want to lynch it. Get a life.
It’s the fact that it was in a primary school that alarms me. I worry for the little ones attending the school. Thank goodness none of my family are there anymore.
And sometimes shit happens
I bet the little shit who did this thought this was great! A budding arsonist
Needs his eyes caning or a savaging by the school leopard
Yep, this is where it all starts, especially if they get away with it, and where they are classed as heros
Thank you Fire Brigade, for responding so quickly to potentially young children’s life-threatening situation. The individual/s responsible need to be shown the consequences of their actions.
Self igniting loo rolls, now there will be panic buying. Whoever jammed the lav roll in hand dryer needs a good talking too, bit early to be on the path of wrong doing hate to think what they will be like in 10 years time.
Could this be a flash in the pan?
