On this day in 1901, representatives of Isle of Wight cricket clubs met with the intention of forming an Isle of Wight Cricket Club at the invitation of Mr H.C. Damant of Cowes.
The proposal was enthusiastically agreed and a committee was appointed to draft rules, fix subscriptions and arrange fixtures. It was decided to play fixtures at an Isle of Wight Cricket Ground in Newport.
Annual General Meetings of the Isle of Wight Cricket Club were held at Warburton’s Hotel in Newport.
Games were subsequently arranged with prestigious sides including the Hampshire Hogs and the Trojans.
The club decided not to employ professionals on a regular basis although it was thought they might be able to play in some games.
