Letter to the editor – 17th March 2025
“As we reflect on the heart of our rural community, one place stands out as a shining beacon of love, learning, and connection: Wroxall School. This incredible institution has been the cornerstone of our community for over 150 years, nurturing generations of children and fostering a sense of belonging among families and neighbors.
“We believe Wroxall School & Pre School is more than just a school building – it’s a vibrant hub of activity, a symbol of hope, and a source of pride for our rural community. It’s a place where children’s laughter and curiosity fill the air, where teachers inspire and guide, and where families come together to support one another. Friendships have bloomed for children, Adults, Staff and community members across the Island.
“Wroxall Primary & Preschool , known as the beating heart of Wroxall as we know it, has a remarkable way of making everyone feel seen, heard, and valued. From the welcoming smile of the wonderful headteacher (Miss Hopkinson) to the kindness of the teachers, every interaction is infused with warmth, compassion, and dedication. The staff and faculty are not just educators; they’re mentors, role models, and friends.
“The impact of Wroxall School extends far beyond the classroom. Our school is committed to supporting the local rural community, and this is evident in the numerous projects and initiatives undertaken. For instance, The recent partnership with the new Local NHS Dentist provides essential support for children’s oral health some of whom have waited years to be able to get dental support due to limited availability across the island. Adoption of donkeys from The Donkey Sanctuary in Wroxall has not only taught children about responsibility and compassion but also provided a unique learning experience.
“Throughout the year, Wroxall school participates in various community events, such as the Isle of Wight Annual Carnival season – The MardiGras. students have also demonstrated their creative talents by designing the playground sign for Ventnor Botanical Gardens which stands pride of place by a winning student. A Wroxall student also won a competition for designing & creating a 2024 Christmas card for our island MP, Joe Robertson.
“Wroxall School is also dedicated to supporting local charities and initiatives. Including the Harvest Festival, donations have provided essential funds to the Wroxall food bank, with proud support for Stenbury Hall which has helped to strengthen community bonds. The availability to publicly hire Wroxall school hall for special events has further cemented Wroxall school’s position as a community hub.
“In addition, Wroxall primary has been recognized for its commitment to conservation and sustainability. The Wightlink Green fund award has enabled the school to create a nature garden, teaching children the importance of conservation, attracting wildlife, and growing fruits and vegetables on site. The lovingly planted Lavender now fills the air with its fragrant positivity and brings a sense of peace to our picturesque surroundings.
“Wroxall School is proud to be a “My Happy Mind School,” prioritizing the mental health and well-being of all students. Dedicated staff provide a nurturing environment, encouraging children to develop positive relationships, self-awareness, and resilience.
“Furthermore, Wroxall school is committed to supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Experienced staff provide tailored support, ensuring that every child receives the care and attention they need to thrive, The schools recent multi million refurbishment allows for space and modern adaptions to further support Disabilities where needed.
“Our school’s heritage, formed in 1871, is a testament to its enduring presence and commitment to our community. As we look to the future, we are reminded of the importance of preserving this institution for generations to come.
“Let us celebrate the joy, love, and connection that Wroxall School & PreSchool brings to our community. Let us honor the tireless efforts of the staff, faculty, and volunteers who make our school shine. And let us stand together to ensure that this beloved institution continues to thrive, inspiring future generations to grow, learn, and flourish.”
Sincerely,
South Wight Community
This council are the most disgusting bunch of people, and I use the word “people” very loosely. Jonathan Bacon has done absolutely nothing good EVER. He is destroying the fabric of communities all over the island, the agenda for his plans reads something like this “If we destroy community, people can not come together to be strong and fight against this council and MY decisions.” While this may have worked in the past, it won’t now, people have social media to fight back on, Bacon and Jordan your time is nearly up. This council needs to go, and I don’t mean devolution either.
It doesn’t matter who is running the sh*t show,
same agenda.
Lovely sentiment but unfortunately if running the school is losing money it has to be closed. . A large percentage of the pupils do not even live in Wroxall.
Close the school use the land for low cost housing to benefit the community
I think that Wroxall school was originally gifted to the village by a resident for local children, so when the old school was sold did that money then transfer to the new school and if so surely there is a question of part ownership
I could not have put it better Irish Bacon and Jordan are totally incompetent they make a mess of everything they do. I just hope that the people of Brading remember the part Bacon has played in the school closure fiasco the next time an election takes place, they have even delayed this for one year so that they can keep getting the money they have denied us all our democratic right to vote because they are running scared.
