As part of its Stronger Starts programme, Tesco stores across the Isle of Wight are inviting customers to round up their bill to the nearest pound at the checkout during 1 week in July and another in August, with all funds being split between the food charities FareShare and the Trussell Trust. This Summer will also see Tesco expand its pre-packed customer donation bags to all large stores on the Island. The bags, which typically cost between £2 and £3, are pre-filled with healthy and nutritious long-life items and can be picked up in store and paid for at the checkout. The donated food is passed to FareShare and the Trussell Trust, who will distribute it to charities and food banks to help those who need it most. Claire De Silva, Head of Communities at Tesco, says:
“Too often families with too little support during the holidays see their children miss out on the good stuff every child deserves – not just for their physical health but for their mental wellbeing as well. “If we all pull together over the coming months, whether that’s popping a few tins into a food collection point, picking up a food donation bag in our stores or rounding up our grocery bill, we can make a difference to the lives of thousands of children, who, without support, could have a tough summer holiday.”
Emma Revie, CEO at the Trussell Trust, adds:
“We are extremely grateful to Tesco for their generous donation and are excited to partner with them to launch these in-store summer activities, making it easier for people to support their local food bank throughout the holidays. “Our network of food banks distributed more than 1.1 million parcels for children last year, almost double the amount provided just five years ago and this illustrates the unacceptable levels of hardship that many people are currently facing. No-one should need to turn to a charity for something as essential as food, and as we work towards achieving the long-term change needed, Tesco’s support this summer will make a real difference to families across the UK.”

“healthy and nutritious long-life items”
Yum yum. I bet they can’t wait to eat all of that ultra-processed garbage to make them even more obese. Give them some fruit and veg instead.
The example show was not ultra processed. Pasta and beans, healthy and nutricious
Agree ‘long-life’ and ‘healthy and nutritious’ don’t tend to sit well alongside each other.
I was told that supermarkets used to give their ripe fruit and veg to various good causes such as zoos etc but no longer do that. Not sure why it changed.
Because they would rather throw it in the bin than give it away , Morrisons is a prime example , the food waste is horrendous
Put in a pack of condoms so the selfish parent (s) can use them IF they are oh sooo poor they can’t feed their current children.
I would give nothing to these parasites but condoms may prevent even more spongers
Why can’t people get a career behind them and save their own money before building a family?? Why do so many people find it acceptable to have a family and make the working tax payers pay for it. Maybe I’m just old fashioned.
sometimes people have done that,.. and then through no fault of their own,.. end up out of work
the benifit system seems to favour those who never work, over those who have worked, but fallen hard times
(exactly the opposite of what it was supposed to be for)
why is it that we can have over three million, millionaires in the UK & we still need food banks ?
While I do agree with you about genuine people falling on hard times, but seriously though the government has made it too easy to get paid for doing nothing. A few years ago I was out of a job and asked the job centre if I could get any help with bill etc, I was told to go and get a woman pregnant and claim for that. I didn’t do that just so you know. It’s ridiculous really.
Totally agree.Benifit babys Just give the chav mums extra money. House .Rent and council tax exemption to spend on there nails and hair and going out. With different sperm donor fathers. Not Dads who provide for their offspring. Then they wonder why the are short of money for the childrens essentials. But there not stupid because they know all
These charities exist. If you can’t support yourselves or your children you should not have them.Full …………..
For a robot, your spelling and punctuation isn’t very good. Compelling argument though. You sound like a forward-thinking intellectual with your finger on the pulse………(superfluous fullstops)
Can’t feed, don’t breed
Hang on,..
if I understand this right, Tesco aren’t actually giving anything … (apart from the bag) ?
You (the customer) pick & bag, pay for the contents & then put it in the charity pile…
So all Tesco are actualy doing is providing a 1p paper bag….
to that headline should read “TESCO STORES TO SUPPORT CHILDREN FACING HUNGER THIS SUMMER HOLIDAYS by giving 1p paper bags for customers to donate food in”
Or how about ‘FREE BAG FROM OUR 4% PROFITS ON FOOD ITEMS’. Easier to see the money they’ve made from their ‘generosity’ then.
How about no…
I am fed up with this checkout begging – it is just a digital collection tub being shaken at you.
mcdonalds do it, poundland were doing it, now tesco’s – just FO with your sponging off the customer, reduce the prices and focus on making sure “we” the hard working, tax paying people of this country actually get left alone to buy their groceries without being begged off
Exactly, as usual Tesco are trying to take credit for the misguided generosity of their customers.
‘….grateful to Tesco for their generous donation….’ THEIR generous donation?? The customers donations surely? And is it asking us to believe they are not profiting by prompting customers to buy their pre-filled bags? Now if they said they would MATCH the customer donations or stop the hunger profiteering I might be inclined to shop there for goods to donate to the food bank. As it stands, trumpeted for smug back-patting….hell no.
Donate directly to the charities, Tesco just want the tax rebates
Where exactly are these children who are ‘facing hunger’ this summer, and why?
We have an extremely generous benefits system, for which people risk life and limb to get here to claim. So, what are the parents spending the benefits money on if not for food etc?
Drink, fags, takeaways, tattoos, nails, hair, Sky tv, iphones, …
Which children facing hunger are we talking about here? Working famillies who are struggling to survive, or free loaders children whose chav parents are too snort, swilled, smacked to be capable of making sure the kids are properly fed, and would rather be spending their free handouts on bling, tattoos, smack, fags, nails, hair? This question needs to raised and the two categories separated and prioritised between those who are genuinely struggling and those taking the piss out of the system.
