A crash on The Downs is causing traffic delays this evening (Thursday). Officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary were called to the scene on The Downs Road – near the junction with Brading Down Road – at around 17:00. At the scene a crash involving 2 Kia Picantos has taken place. Visibility at the top of The Downs Road is poor due to thick fog, so it’s believed the conditions have been involved in how the crash has come about. Traffic coming from Ryde and Sandown using Ashey Road and Brading Down Road respectively cannot currently go down toward Knighton Shute. Only traffic coming up the road is being allowed through. Motorists are being advised to avoid the area for the time being. UPDATE @ 17:40 – A 2nd road traffic collision involving a Pegueot and a Citroen has occurred just metres down the road near the junction with Rowlands Lane. The Citroen has collided with the back of the Peugeot 107 damaging its rear end, leaving glass all over the floor. Motorists are also advised to drive with caution in the area given the loose shards.

Island drivers don’t know what headlights and foglights are (no wonder the EU made daytime running lights mandatory for new vehicles after 2013), I assume speed and following distance (or lack of) had a part to play too.

Maybe just slow down when it is foggy.

Maybe drivers should use their dipped headlights and fog lights and not drive right up the vehicles ass that they are following and drive on you’re side of the road, not in the middle of it.
They can’t even use there indicaters don’t ask too much maybe they need there sight testing too

Cue the 50 comments from armchair rubberneckers with the pointy finger. I’ll say it then….hope everybody’s ok. It’s bloody nasty out there. Mind you, it’s not much better here most days.
I hope all who are involved are OK. Just amazes me that people don’t put their car lights on mine are set to auto but don’t activate in fog so I override them, and use the fog lights.
Having driven that road twice today it’s concerning that many many vehicles didn’t have lights on, those that did most just driving lights (day running) and no rear lights. If drivers are not thinking light’s and speed? Is it because under influence?.

I got caught up in this car-nage and eventually ended up going Briddlesford/Havenstreet – where there was a crashed white car ‘parked’ in the hedge. I know there was a bit of fog, but was it a full moon too?
We all need to be more vigilante, because we never know where the next idiots will come from…
