The Conservative Group of councillors on the Isle of Wight Council has appointed its new leader, Councillor Susie Ellis.
Suzie was elected unopposed at a meeting of the group earlier this evening (Thursday). She is the first woman to lead the Isle of Wight Conservatives.
Since 2021, Suzie has represented Central Rural ward – a role she combines with running her own business.
Over the past 2 years she has focused on local issues in her ward including: concerns with planning enforcement and applications; tackling flooding; plus traffic and road safety problems, including pushing for improvements outside primary schools.
On the council, she is Vice-Chair of the Policy and Scrutiny of Children’s Services Committee; and sits on 3 further committees: Licensing, Appeals and Corporate Scrutiny.
She is also passionate about the environment, sustainability, and preserving the Island’s beautiful Island landscape.
Having grown up on the Island, she now lives in Winford with her husband Tim, and has 5 grown-up children and 2 grandchildren.

“I am delighted to have been elected unopposed as Leader of the Conservative Group on the Isle of Wight Council – and I am proud to be the first woman to take on the role.
“I fully recognise there’s been a huge amount of speculation over recent weeks regarding the political direction of the Council – and there are a wide range of views, including some different perspectives within the Conservative Group.
“My focus now will be to sit down with all of the members of the Group, and seek consensus on the best way forward for the Council – and the Island – as a whole.
“I’m keen to explore the best way forward and feel there’s an opportunity for collaborative working across the chamber – for the good of the Island”.
Suzie takes over from Councillor Joe Robinson, who stepped down to focus on his campaign to become the Isle of Wight East’s first MP.

Labour have nothing to do with it. Its the Conservatives that have been ruining the whole country for the gain of their mates, they’re the ones in power
Suzie sounds well qualified and genuinely concerned for our island and its improvement and future. It’s such a pity she is associated with a party that has managed to ruin this country, left it bankrupt, removed its right to protest, caused great poverty and broken public services.
A bit like the Labour Party then. When they were in power.

You all seem to be under the illusion that a local councillor is running the country. This woman is the new head of the Conservatives on IW council, which is a weak and feeble organisation that lacks any proper leadership or appropriate skills. The only thing this council is good at is squandering money, especially on that hopeless amd useless money pit called Island Roads. These councillors make me sick with their bloody musical chairs and posturing. Do something useful for a change and just all of you resign. A chimp would make a better job of running the council.

At least Robertson has gone from that job, however the thought that he might be our MP fills me with dread he is completely hopeless it just goes to show that the standards required to be an MP have fallen to rock bottom. I am a lifelong conservative voter but on this case I will vote for someone else to try to keep him out.
