A Ryde man who subjected an ex-partner to years of controlling and coercive behaviour has avoided an immediate prison sentence.
Zak Newnham, 53, of Reed Street in Oakfield, appeared at Winchester Crown Court last week (Friday) for sentencing.
Whilst the 53-year-old was found not guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, making threats to kill and intentional strangulation, a jury trial at the Isle of Wight Crown Court back in October found him guilty of 2 counts of engaging in controlling/coercive behaviour in an intimate/family relationship between the 1st January 2016 and 14th March 2023.
The victim in the case was in a relationship with Newnham at the time of the offences.
Appearing before a judge on the mainland last week, Newnham was handed a 2-year prison sentence, suspended for 24 months.
He was also ordered to pay costs of £2,500 and a £187 victim surcharge fee, as well as being ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work and 35 rehabilitation days.
Newnham was also handed an indefinite restraining order.

So many numpties on this once safe and beautiful island.
I would say that he’s a bit more than a “Numpty” as you put it
I would say that he’s a bit more than a “Numpty” as you put it.
Do you not remember the woman killed at Annerley in Brading, or the other poor, poor woman finally subjected to a full week’s captivity and torture having her face repeatedly help down on a cooker by her partner at a houseboat on the embankment at Bembridge? Safe? Don’t be an idiot; domestic violence both here and everywhere else is as old as time. If anything, thanks to education and relatively recent legislation the incidences are on the wane. This sentence however just shows how difficult it is to prove within a domestic setting, hence why he only got 2 years suspended. Should have been 10.
Totally agree , he should have been locked up the victim clearly endured abuse for a number of years . A suspended sentence is a joke . They wonder why women don’t go to the police because there is no justice . Authorities keep claiming they’re stepping up but they don’t .
Absolutely right.
