Firefighters were mobilised to the clifftop at Compton last night when a group of people set up a campfire – despite the tinder-dry conditions.
Concerned onlookers alerted Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service to the situation, with 1 appliance from Freshwater sent to the scene at the National Trust’s Hanover Point car park.
Firefighters extinguished the fire, damped down the area and discussed the risks with those responsible.
A spokesperson for Freshwater Fire Station has said:
“Please do not light fires outdoors during these hot dry conditions. It would take just a few sparks and a slight breeze and fire would spread rapidly taking land, property, wildlife and potentially even human life with it”.
‘Hangover point’ certainly is with all the van life types that camp there.

They were on holiday here from Wales it wasn’t a group it was a couple who had a bucket of water next to the fireman , but there testosterone level went up and insisted on using there hose, so unless you were there to witness it , keep your opinions to yourself

The problem with camp fires isn’t the fire spreading, but sparks and hot embers floating away and starting fires elsewhere. Buckets of water won’t help.
