UPDATED: The stormy weather experienced earlier this week is set to return today causing disruption to travel services with an increased chance of further flooding across the Island.
Residents and a number of businesses are continuing to clear up from damage caused on Monday when the Island fell at the hands of heavy rain and strong winds which has left a trail of destruction and will prove costly for many.
Island Line services could be suspended for a number of weeks according to reports after rain water swept away part of the track at Smallbrook junction, taking away the ballast under the rails. Meanwhile in the West Wight, a land slip has lead to the closure of New Road, Alum Bay, cutting off vehicular access to The Needles and pleasure park. A full road closure has been put in place until further notice while engineers assess the situation, with a large section of the roadside having collapsed.
Traffic is continuing to be diverted today (Friday) between Brading and Sandown with Morton Marsh still closed due to excessive flooding.
Southern Vectis’ Routes 2 and 3 will continue to divert via Yaverland and Yarbridge until further notice.
A number of properties in the South Wight are returning to normal following untimely disruption to water supplies on Christmas Eve and into Christmas Day, which saw 4,000 properties in Shanklin, Ventnor, Whitwell and Wroxall without water.
Thankfully, supplies were restored to many on Christmas Eve, with others without fresh water until Boxing Day. Southern Water supplied bottled water at several locations , however stocks ran out fast.
Robin Hill Country Park is closed today (Friday) due to a number of fallen trees and flooding. It is hoped they will be able to reopen the park tomorrow.
A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued by the Met Office and is effective until 21:00 tonight.
