An East Cowes man who stole cider and brandy from the bar of a Sandown hotel has been ordered to pay £200 compensation.
Jamie Lane, 23, of Gort Road in East Cowes, pleaded guilty to burglary other than dwelling theft and concerned in the supply of a drug (Class B) when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (30th May).
Ann Smout, prosecuting told the court that on 1st September 2022, the bar manager of the OYO Marina Hotel in Sandown noticed that the bar area had been broken into overnight (31st August). Significant damage was caused to the bar including broken hinges and smashed windows. It was estimated that this damage was in the region of £300.
Cider and brandy were stolen from the hotel and consumed by Lane and others on the night of the incident.
Having called the Police and identified Lane using CCTV at the premises the 23-year-old was taken to Newport Police Station where he was given a caution and told to pay £200 to the hotel by March 2023.
Lane failed to pay by this time and then failed to do so again resulting in the matter being brought before the courts.
On 10th August 2022, Police seized 1g of cannabis and Lane’s mobile phone. After examining the electronic device of over 7,000 messages a total of 9 showed to be linked with the supply of drugs including arranging a price for sale and where the exchange would take place.
Defending, Barry Arnett said that in relation to the burglary Lane had been on a ‘bender’ and that he drank the booze not long after he stole it. He also added that at the time of the drug offence Lane was a very heavy smoker but that he we would only sell any surplus cannabis he had to friends for ‘the same he purchased it for’.
For the burglary, Magistrates ordered Lane to pay compensation of £200 and £85 costs.
In terms of sentencing the 23-year-old father for the drugs offence, Magistrates have adjourned the case until 7th July to allow an ‘all-options’ pre-sentence report be compiled. Lane has been granted unconditional bail until that time.

those hoteliers deserve all they get, they took these rubbish In believing it was easy money and thanks to them Sandown is now ruined
I don’t expect they asked to be robbed. The issue here is drugs, and the soft sentences handed out. Sandown is run down for a whole load of reasons. What do you expect a hotel to do in a run down area? If it doesn’t survive it will end up like the ocean hotel, another ruin on the landscape of Sandown.
The Oyo Sandown is full of junkies and ex convicts. Its a very dangerous homeless hostel, with a facade of “hotel”
No one is safe there. Yet the council continue to place vulnerable people there. and the owner continues to take money he sorely needs. Take a look at the back of his building.
IWC should be ashamed of the state of Sandown, it needs rejuvenation immediately its the cesspit of the island. if it was bombed it would be an improvement.
So the manager had no idea the place was being robbed.
There is absolutely no security at that place residents and homeless are NOT SAFE THERE. VIPL SHOULD HAVE THIS NEGLECTED PREMISES SHUT DOWN. ALL HE DOES IS SPONGE OFF THE HOMELESS.
