A shortage of staff means that Island Line is once again running a reduced train timetable today (Monday).
Despite a major £26million investment in the Ryde-Shanklin railway to keep it open and operating more regularly, a lack of available staff keeps hindering the South Western Railway service.
A total of 9 scheduled journeys have been cancelled for later on today. They include:
- 15:49 – Shanklin to Ryde Esplanade
- 16:15 – Ryde Esplanade to Shanklin
- 16:48 – Shanklin to Ryde Esplanade
- 17:14 – Ryde Esplanade to Shanklin
- 17:48 – Shanklin to Ryde Esplanade
- 18:14 – Ryde Esplanade to Shanklin
- 18:48 – Shanklin to Ryde Esplanade
- 19:14 – Ryde Esplanade to Ryde St John’s
It’s unknown if Tuesday’s service will be affected.

So much thought to the general public. Maybe, just maybe they should hire an extra staff or two… unknown why they cannot draught one or two over from mainland .. ??
Because it takes up to 6 months to train a guard on how to operate a new train and learn the route.
Learn the route?
It goes up and down the line not rocket science
Ever worked on the railway?
No, thought not.
If tar Mac and a battery shuttle bus had been utilised then most anyone could drive such with ease.
Trains died for good reason.
There’s only one route, it’s not Spaghetti Junction…
Best they get on with it then! Keeps happening, clearly not enough staff
This is part of the modernisation that railway companies are fighting to bring in and equally fought against by the rail unions, six months to train, my A—-, this isnt the west coast mainline, this is a very small, and not much bigger than some toy train sets Ive seen, if they put in eight hours a day(perish the thought) for a whole week without striking it could be safely achieved within a month.
Looks like a long walk down pier later
Shows once again how useless the Island Line is, coupled with the non floating bridge we are blighted with probably the worst public transport in the UK given Southern Vectis only run routes that make the most profit and many places have never had a bus service that is any use.
So, what is the reason for the staff shortage?
Sickness?
Recruitment?
Training?
Is it the drivers?
Is it the support staff?
Is it because of someone resigning?
Just some more detail please.
Yes, to give some context to the story it would be nice to know why they don’t have enough staff to run the service. But, I guess that would mean doing some actual journalistic work rather than simply copy and pasting what the train company hands out.
CP is just as bad, never asking ‘Why?’
Sunny weather Beach calling and the perfect excuse Covid. Job done. Full pay and days off in high Summer. Simples Most of the NHS staff do it more than you could ever imagine.
Perhaps before any more money is invested island trains should consider adopting driverless trains policy, not a cheap solution but far safer, most european cities including London have in part such services, it is not new technology, slightly unnerving to start with but you soon get used to it and it takes out the human error element which is repsonsible for most accidents and delays when the driver fancies an extra couple of days holiday on the sick..
Are there any employees of this rail company willing to let the public know why its short of staff???
You don’t need to give away your identity, just spill the beens….if you do, more beens will be along soon..
I can’t see many employees coming on here and saying ‘Sorry, I just fancied a day off today.’
How many people do they employ anyway? Can’t be many for one train an hour or whatever it is now.
Island echos very own twitter has already shown 4 bus services cancelled, but God forbid that island echo makes a song and dance of southern vectis
