Despite a £26million investment to enhance the Island’s train services with new trains, platforms and track, it is staff shortages that are still letting Island Line down.
South Western Railway has announced that a number of services between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin have been cancelled today.
It is due to a shortage of train crew.
The following services have been cancelled
- 1648 Shanklin to Ryde Esplanade
- 1714 Ryde Esplanade to Shanklin
- 1748 Shanklin to Ryde Esplanade
- 1814 Ryde Esplanade to Shanklin

Wouldn’t it have been easier to print the times of the evening trains that are running?
such a shame about pride in your job
Doesn’t anyone do overtime these day’s?? We go on about the cost of living, so do a bit of overtime….I think rail workers get too much pay anyway that probably why they won’t do overtime…
They do overtime when it’s offered. Often it isn’t and when it is it still isn’t enough to provide cover.
Love the way certain people’s knee-jerk reaction is to blame the workers rather than the poor planning and penny-pinching by IslandLine.
Island line have been looseing millions of pounds for years, and you call them penny pinching, do me a favour and shut-up..
Overtime is optional not compulsory. Most do some to help out when they can. Have you not considered staff need time off with their families ect. They earn good money because they have huge responsibility . So stop posting crap you no nothing about you sad git
This, like the Floating Bridge today, is purely down to Management operating on an absolute minimum staffing basis. There is no leeway, no ‘spare’ personnel available for cover.
In the past a member of Management would have stepped in. Now however the so-called Managers have no idea what to do to cover an operational staff shortage!
It’s a common problem across a huge number of businesses these days.
Seems the only conclusion is that they are not making money whether the trains run or not. If there was money in it, surely they would have better staff cover arrangements.
All the mainline train company’s allow you to claim money back if train is late after so many minutes delay, why can’t island line be fined for not giving a reliable service.
I feel like crap at the moment i must admit.so I cant blame them. Replacement bus services under way
Hasn’t the service improved massively as promised since the “improvements”? Oh wait, no, actually its worse…..
I see no reason why the Ryde Pierhead to Shanklin service cann ot be returned to three coach steam-hauled trains. It worked well for many years; in fact I can recall seeing three steam-hauled trains at the same time at the pierhead. The Esplanade station underpass between platforms 1 and 2 also worked in those days.
The old train stock had the best performance on BR.
Who bought this latest rubbish?
The STAFF are sick, not the trains. Read the article correctly.
Island line are just taking the wee wee
Why are these businesses (Island Line and Floating Bridge) so understaffed that there’s no one to step in when someone is unwell.
There should always be someone to fill the vacancy. As for the Floating Bridge, how hard can it be for anyone with a modicum of intelligence.
