A 58-year-old man from Shorwell who drunkenly assaulted emergency workers who were trying to restrain him has been sentenced to an 18-month community order.
Jonathan Nash, 58, of Westcourt Close in Shorwell, pleaded guilty to assault by beating and 3x assault by beating of an emergency worker when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last week (Friday 21st April).
Liz Miller, prosecuting, told the court that on 2nd April 2023 at around 16:55 an ambulance was called after concern for welfare was raised after Nash passed out whilst drinking with a neighbour.
Once paramedics had arrived – and he had regained consciousness – Nash became increasingly agitated and told them to ‘f**k off’ before attempting to punch a paramedic in the face.
A woman – who Nash was drinking with – also sustained punches to the face in the ordeal, however, she suffered no visible injuries.
Paramedics worked to restrain Nash before officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary arrived at the scene.
Officers arrested Nash – who by now had become even more aggressive – for common assault. This was greeted with another call of ‘f**k off’ before Nash assaulted the Police grabbing officers wrists and radios.
PARVA spray was then used to further arrest Nash.
The 58-year-old appeared on Island Echo back in October when he pleaded guilty after he told a 999-call handler he’d kill a woman but never had any intention of doing so. He was also convicted for drink driving after driving from Shorwell to Carisbrooke 2 times the drink drive limit.
In a report read out by the probation service it was noted that Nash who has had struggles since the death of his wife and that the 58-year-old had re-engaged with inclusion in attempts to address his alcohol consumption.
Nash himself admitted to the court ‘I’d probably be dead by now if it wasn’t for my support worker’.
Defending, Michael McGoldrick said that his client had suffered with his mobility after unsuccessful hip operations and used a zimmer frame around his home. He also added that Nash was trying his best to beat the bottle.
Nash saw his existing community community order revoked and resentenced. He was sentenced to a new 18-month order with a 12-month alcohol treatment requirement and 30 rehabilitation activity days attached. He was also ordered to pay compensation of £150.

Wow. Abuse the NHS should = Banned from using any type of NHS or emergency service. While the paramedics are trying to do their best for this individual, someone more deserving goes without. Utter scum. No excuses. Period.
Should have been 18 months in jail
I don’t understand why ambulance staff don’t leave. If he told me to “fu** off”, I would! There could have been someone worthwhile waiting desperately for an ambulance
Waste of good air, despicable behaviour..see them too often lording around thinking this world owes then something..
