Firefighters have been mobilised to Morrisons supermarket in Newport this lunchtime (Monday), where shoppers have been evacuated as a result of a reported gas leak.
Members of the public were swiftly led out of the building at around 12:20.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has mobilised 2 appliances to the scene at Church Litten, with positive pressure ventilation being utilised to rid any toxic gases from within the building.
A cordon has been erected around the building as firefighters from Newport and Ryde deal with the situation.
UPDATE @ 13:02 – It has been confirmed that the gas leak has emanated from one of the store’s refrigerators.
Around 900gms of refrigerant has been leaked as a result of a fridge being moved.
UPDATE @ 13:47 – Morrisons has now re-opened to customers following the conclusion of fire service activity.





























































































All the shoppers are moaning they got evacuated. Terribly sorry if not risking your health is an inconvenience to you sir.
And I will wager many of the skanks, of which there are plenty, will have ‘used’ this to their advantage.
They will have walked out without paying, using the panic, fear, etc as an excuse IF caught, which they were unlikely to be with said items.
To them every cloud has a golden lining
Yes plenty of such will be dining and drinking well to-nite.

The Newport store really needs a major revamp, the one in Lake is far superior, better stocked and more staff.
i think they need to spend a bit of money on them there always leaking water from there drains.
I think it’s terrible.
