24-year-old Megan Durham, who faces a custodial sentence for stabbing a woman in the head 4 times with a chisel, has been told she has 3 months to improve her behaviour.
Durham, previously of Osborne Road in Shanklin, left the 41-year-old victim with injuries to her head and leg during the serious assault at an address on Atherley Road on 22nd November last year.
Police were called to the scene at 22:40 and officers arrested 3 women. Durham was later charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon, with the 2 other women released without charge.
Earlier this year, Bournemouth Crown Court heard how Durham’s victim sustained 3 stab injuries to her scalp and 1 to her forehead, as well as a bite on the thigh. Durham admitted causing grievous bodily harm without intent and the case was adjourned for sentencing.
Durham was due to appear before the Judge back in May of this year, but the case was pushed back to July and then pushed back again to 9th September.
It was on Friday that Durham was handed a deferred sentence – this means if Durham stays out of trouble between now and 12th December, the judge will consider handing her a less severe sentence than if she was to get into trouble during that period. It is an opportunity for her to prove herself.
She has been made subject to a restraining order with immediate effect, however.
The 24-year-old has already spent 9 months in custody, which will also be taken into consideration.
Durham is due back before Bournemouth Crown Court on 12th December.

Unbelievable!! 3 months to improve her behaviour. Ridiculous
Just imagine if such sentencing had been given to Peter Sutcliff. What about the victim? What is wrong with the judicial system? Something is terribly wrong here.
Omg!! I really do give up on the justice system
Too soft punishment if you ask me.
are you serious – this disgusting, incompetent female needs to be kept in jail for many years until she poses no further threat to society.
would a man be treated the same way – no, he would be going down for years – if she doesn’t get sentenced for years, then it needs referring for review due to an inappropriately light sentence being given.
That dude who took that little girl at fort victoria was released on bail back into the community less than twenty four hours later…this is a problem that transcends gender and sex, it’s a fundamental problem where the justice system is no longer fit for purpose. They’ll slap you with a speeding ticket and then make a statement in the news about how their doing their job, but someone stabs someone or rapes a child and they’re allowed back out and about.
Geez, just throw the lunatic in jail and be done with it! Police and the justice system need to take their kids gloves off. This type of scum needs to be removed from society, end of.
The Police don’t give the sentence and get fed up with the problem people returning to donit again.
Omg what is the matter with the courts absolutely disgusting do a crime do the time she will def affend again
Anybody guess why Bournemouth crown court is dealing with the case and not IW crown court, other than the fact that this vicious animal probably lives there now?
Once again we witness yet another travesty of justice. We can only hope that she gets a lengthy custodial sentence in December, and rightly so.
3 months????? For stabbing someone in the head????? With NO intent????? The judge needs assessing whether he/she is capable of remaining in such authority. What a joke. Stabbing someone 4 times in the head is INTENT the woman won’t change and if she does it’s only to get a Lesser punishment, she’ll be back in the clink and court not long after release no doubt (angry face)
What!
Where is the justice in that.
Stabs someone then told to behave?
Ridiculous no deterent there.
We simply don’t know the full facts to this case and there were probably extenuating circumstances considered in the court judgement
This is surely a new level of judicial incompetence for an attack that is reported as a serious criminal offence. The sentence should be years in incarceration. The lenient outcome only benefits the offender.
Read the article. No sentence has yet been given. The three months is a deferment. She has already served nine months on remand.
Another unbelievable situation where the injured victim will be confused and deeply affected by this pathetic decision. It undermines all the work that has to go into these
Horrific cases, by all the agencies involved, do they think it’s all in vain?
The courts in this country have totally lost the plot, you get more for drunk driving.
Is this not attempted murder????
Once again, a disgusting and unfathomable decision by the judiciary! I know the Police are fed up spending hours investigating crimes only to have to release the suspect as they await a bewildering decision from the CPS and if lucky enough to charge they know the sentence will be a joke! The main issue is the lack of spare jail cells… maybe it is time to reopen Camp Hill or, God forbid, build some new ones and give needy parts of the country a kick start with new jobs, and most of all get our local idiots off the Island and give us a rest!
