Prolific shoplifter Warren Russell was sentenced to yet another community order after he pleaded guilty to a theft offence this week.
Warren Russell, 39, of Green Street in Ryde, pleaded guilty to 1 count of theft from a shop when he appeared in front of Magistrates on Tuesday.
Ann Smout, prosecuting, told the court that on 11th September, at around 17:30, an off-duty Police officer noticed Russell walking out of the Co-op on West Street in Ryde with bag containing several bottles of alcohol.
The officer entered the store and asked if Russell had paid for any of the goods he walked out with to which staff at the shop said he hadn’t.
After CCTV was then reviewed, it was seen that Russell had taken 4 bottles of red wine off the shelf and placed them into a clear Tesco bag. He then proceeded to walk to the back of the shop and took the security alarms off all the bottles, before walking out of the store.
The goods that Russell stole totalled £42.75.
Defending, Jim Osborne said that the 39-year-old had brought some Valium off the internet and consumed it that day meaning he had no recollection of events.
Magistrates revoked Russell’s previous community order and handed him a new 18-month community order with a 9-month drug rehabilitation requirement and 25 rehabilitation activity days. He was also ordered to pay £42.75 in compensation to Co-op.

“39-year-old had brought some Valium off the internet and consumed it that day meaning he had no recollection of events.” I smell bulls**t…again!
Point being at ONE TIME admitting you had taken drugs or admitting you were drunk would have ADDED to your sentence , not be used as a pathetic excuse to decrease such
The real truth is our prisons are crammed full of the worlds criminals so courts can never ever give meaningful sentences again But no one in authority dare say so.
So what if they are full, just chuck them all in together and let them get on with it. Put up or shut up. If they had not broken the law they would not be in that situation. Prison should not be like a holiday camp, it should act as a deterrent, not a lifestyle break.
Oh wait, Human Rights state the number of prisoners per square foot to a cell. Bull*hit,
feed them bread and water and cram them all in.
Totally agree!
And surely admitting to procuring prescription only drugs off the Internet should have been an additional offence instead of mitigation of the original offence?
Bonkers!
Instead of fining these people make them work to pay off their debt! Cleaning the streets, rubbish collecting off the ground, ground maintenance anything that is manual hard labour! if they don’t show up to do this! Start taking away goods from their homes, bet they have the latest I phones, televisions, etc. Do what the debt collectors do? Also stop their benefits??
That would probably end up with them shoplifting. Oh. They already are.
Chop off a hand he won’t do it again, magistrates are too soft, he will be back in court again soon.
There’s an expensive harbour at Ventnor that needs cleaning ever year.
Hopefully the rehabilitation requirement will help him to change his ways.
Here we are again, yet another ‘serial’ offender let off by our unbelievably lenient judges.
They should be investigated for incompetence.
When he lived in Lake he stole all day, then Newport now Ryde and always blaming drugs, after his recent prison sentence for theft surely the next time he is caught he gets an even longer prison sentence but not the courts in this country, slap on the wrist go buy some more drugs with your handout money and steal from every shop in Ryde, total waste of oxygen
Yeah, he used to rent a room from me – didn’t even tell us he was going to court. Found out through paper he’d got a 16 weeks sentence. Got pics of him dealing opposite the house. Room was disgusting – brand new furniture wrecked because he’d cut his drugs on top of it. White powder residue all over. Guy is a slob. I had to dispose of all new furniture and get carpets professionally cleaned!
Who on earth monitors magistrates they seem to live in a different world to the rest of us.
