A drug driver from Ryde who mounted a pavement and collided with a pedestrian had a child in the car at the time of the offence, a court has heard.
Robyn Russell, 29, of Slade Road in Oakfield, admitted drug driving (cannabis) when she appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday (27th September).
Prosecuting, Lauren Stone, told the court that at around 19:50 on the 18th March, a man was walking along Cross Street in Oakfield when he saw a red Peugeot mount the pavement and hit his leg and foot.
The driver drove off without stopping before being located by the male on a nearby road, questioning the female driver – Russell – who replied sarcastically saying ‘sorry did I hit you?’. The mother of 2 then told the man he was lucky to get an apology as ‘not everyone round here would say sorry’.
After their encounter, the pedestrian reported the matter to Police who later visited Russell at her home address. Having admitted that it was her driving the car at the time of the incident, Police requested Russell complete a drugs wipe which showed a level of THC in her blood of 5.8ug/l – well above the specified limit of 2.0ug/l.
The court heard how the pedestrian was told he would need several weeks to recover from injuries to the tendons in his right foot, however Russell denies that she ran over the males appendage.
Defending Russell, Barry Keel told the court that Russell mounted the curb as she tried to avoid an oncoming vehicle that had ‘drifted’ onto her side of the road. He also added that the carer – who was shaken up after the ordeal – smoked a joint when she got home which may have exacerbated the drug reading recorded.
Magistrates adjourned the case until 6th December to allow a pre-sentence report to be compiled. Russell has been handed an interim driving ban in the meantime.

Another one poncing off free handouts claiming every possible one going, billions of pounds going out on these low life, and they stop OUR heating allowance. Looks to me, instead of working for 50 years, and getting no more thought of me for doing it, I should have been better off being a low life scrounging smack head as well
I’m glad there is an interim driving ban , keep dodgy drivers off the road
Does it keep them off the road, though? I doubt it.
She will just drive on the pavement
