Ryde Police Station is to re-open to the public in Autumn 2024, it has been announced today (Monday).
Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones has revealed her plan to re-open 10 more police stations across the South after earmarking a sizeable £2million in her budget.
The re-opening of the facility on Station Street in the town will follow the opening of Cowes Police Station on High Street later this year.
Back in April, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner Donna Jones said she wanted to increase the visibility of the force on the Island.
The force was among those to close stations during public sector cuts following the 2009 financial crisis. Across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight a large number shut their doors to the public in 2014, although some of the stations remained in use as operational bases.
The force currently has 13 police stations that are open to the public. These are a mixture of full-time opening hours and part-time opening. The opening times of the new police stations will be determined based on local demand.
This is the latest announcement made by the Commissioner to increase police visibility, alongside the successful recruitment of 650 extra police officers and her commitment to bring back named ‘Local Bobbies’ to every community.
Police on the Island work in offices in Ryde, Yarmouth, Cowes, Shanklin and Ventnor, as well as in Newport.

Your statement shows that you consider the law as guilty until proven innocent. Which is a very dangerous path. Private security guards have on many occasions been shown to operate with poor judgment as well as prejudice and racism. I’ve worked as a security guard for a large shopping centre. You do not want to give these people powers of arrest. But then Tory policies are often poorly thought out.

Private security guards also have been shown to operate with superior judgment also – you are tarring an entire industry with the same brush, because of a few bad apples. I am guessing you were the bad apple fred -which is why you don’t work in security anymore.
yes they should have powers of arrest, as there will never be enough police to be positioned at every shop or chase down every thief.
fred – Store security detain people that they clearly have seen stealing or have been stopped leaving the store with items that they haven’t paid for – hardly innocent are they. unless security have reason to believe or evidence, they don’t bother any shoppers.

Spend it on ANPR in cars. The police station will just mean cops sitting around drinking tea all day…. 🙁

Maybe if the Tories didn’t close all of them in the first place and slash our police force in half we would still have law and order on the island. How you enjoy your tax cuts as the crime wave washed over the island.
if they spent money on policing instead of sponging welfare claimants who either cant be bothered to work, make excuses as to why they cant work or arrived in dinghy from france, then perhaps we would have better policing

Increase police visibility where it matters. Base yourselves in Church Litten, patrol the town centre – the amount of times I’ve seen police parked up on the sea front on an afternoon when there’s hardly anybody around blows my mind
The same people frequent Church Litten every day drinking… One has a horrible Jack Russel that appears to hate all other dogs. How can they afford to drink themselves into oblivion every day when they obviously don’t work, surely benefits can’t be enough to cover the alcohol consumption.
Apparently there has been a 15% increase in police officers in Hampshire / Wight but only 5% increase in those on the beat?
For security guards to have the power of arrest they will need the same rights as police an the same back up training would be alot different from security training an as for handcuffing a person that’s another problem because done wrong is under law classed as assault an most stores will only have one security guard an no back up an no not all security guards are bad but some are an to give that minority that sort of power is asking for more trouble than it would be worth if the courts done there jobs an actual punished affenders properly then this island wouldn’t be in this mess
