A busy road in Ryde is partially blocked this morning (Saturday) as a result of a lorry striking a tree branch.
East Hill Road was completely obstructed for a time after a large lorry clipped a low hanging section of a tree lining the carriageway.
Most of the debris has now been moved to one side of the road, allowing traffic to pass in both directions under give and take.
The incident occurred shortly after 08:30.
Island Roads are thought to have been informed and contractors are expected on site to remove the tree debris.
The PFI contractor and the Isle of Wight Council have come under fire in recent weeks for the lack of general maintainance in terms of grass cutting, weeds, trees and hedges across the Island. It comes after cuts to the budget.

The Island due to cuts is becoming ever more like a thrid world country, yet council tax rises every year. So clearly having thousands more homes built all paying in more c.tax creates millions more. The money is wasted on benefit breeders, who are not grateful but mostly vile ruining lives of decent people who pay for their cha v lifestyle.
They ruin the lives of decent people in many ways. Do gooders decreed years ago they should be living amongst everyone else, and the anxiety and stress caused from having to endure the continual noise from them at all hours and the aggressive antisocial behaviour takes a terrible toll on one’s mental and physical health, And they always seem to know loads more just like themselves who congregate around them. The do gooders of course, care nothing for that.
The tree overhangs the highway from adjoining land, so who owns the adjoining land? whoever owns it, it is their responsibility to ensure the tree(s) does not affect the highway. I do not wish, unduly, to be paying through tax for someone else garden maintenance.
It is still the Council / Island Roads responsibility to keep the highway clear for use, not sure but think it is 5m or 5.2m from the road, although the tree is on private land they have a responsibility to inform the land owner and could charge for cutting to the correct clearance if not done. Inspections should be done on a regular basis and records kept.
I, for one, am glad that Island Roads have not been savaging back all the grass and wild plants like what usually happens so depressingly year after year, but trees should not be allowed to have branches overhanging the highway where this sort of thing might happen. For one thing it is damaging for the tree and if it wasn’t the driver’s fault, then can’t be blamed, unlike some instances we hear about on this site with vile drunk or drugged up drivers.
